Goggas Creeping Out of the Ice

A couple of years ago I watched a movie set in some icy town where people died from a deadly toxin that had escaped from the carcass of an ancient animal exposed by melng ice.

Rather far-fetched, I thought.

But yesterday I found out that it was not as unrealisc as I had imagined.

We know about many of the impacts of climate change, but this one was new to me: there are billions of bacteria and viruses locked up in permafrost – land that is permanently frozen – which, as the Earth heats up and the permafrost melts, are slowly being released into the environment. And this is the strange part: although these microscopic goggas have been deeply frozen for thousands of years, some of them can come alive once they are thawed.

Not only bacteria and viruses, but roundworms too.

Blow me down.

Sciensts say these may be quite harmless – or even beneficial for the environment – but we don’t yet know

Take the research published last week by Australian researcher Corey Bradshaw. He says science ficon is “rife with fanciful tales of deadly organisms emerging from ice and wreaking havoc on unsuspecng humans”

Then he adds: “But just how far-fetched is it? Could pathogens that were once common on Earth but frozen for millennia in glaciers, ice caps and permafrost, emerge from the melng ice to lay waste to modern ecosystems? The potenal is, in fact, quite real.”

A scary thought. He says in 2003 researchers drilled into ice on the Tibetan plateau that was 750,000 years old and found frozen bacteria that they revived.

In 2016 there was an outbreak of deadly anthrax in Western Siberia from ancient spores that were released when the permafrost thawed. This killed thousands of reindeer and “affected” dozens of people –but he does not say how

Then the Max Planck Instute in Germany says researchers in Russia discovered a ny pair of roundworms in the Siberian permafrost in 2018. These were exposed when rodents made a burrow in the ice. They had been buried very deep at a temperature of minus 80°C.

But here is the really incredible bit: the researchers took them back to the lab and thawed them and the worms came alive again –46,000 years later.

They dated them by doing radiocarbon analysis of plant material just below where the roundworms were found.

That puts them in the Pleistocene age when woolly mammoths, cave lions and woolly rhino roamed Siberia.

The worms were sent to Germany for study where the 46,000 year-old creatures bred in the lab, producing several generaons.

Apparently they were able to survive in this frozen state – called cryptobiosis – because of certain genes that modern roundworms also have.

Some of these organisms released by melng ice may be pathogens, those that invade a host and cause disease.

Bradshaw says the likelihood of a pathogen emerging from melng ice and causing catastrophic species exncons is low.

However, he adds rather chillingly: “Our research shows that this is no longer a fantasy”
