A Circle in the Sand

We loved drawing on the beach as kids, and I sll like it today.

Judging by the number of messages, hearts and paerns I see drawn on beaches all over, many others enjoy it too.

So I was ckled to read this week that our prehistoric ancestors also liked to draw on the beach – 136,000 years agoand right here on the southern Cape Coast.

I learned about this discovery from an arcle in the Conversaon, an online publicaon wrien by academics for the general public.

What these sciensts found was a piece of rock with part of a perfect circle on it (a chunk was broken off), with a dent in the centre. Next to it were two impressions that may have been made by someone kneeling in the sand.

They dated it to 136,000 years old.

The circle is rock now, but was originally made on wet sand and then quickly covered by wind blown sand. Over thousands of years the sand hardened into rock, preserving the circle.

Gives me goose bumps to think of being able to see today a drawing made in sand thousands of years ago.

How did someone strolling on the beach thousands of years ago make such a perfect circle? By using a natural compass, the sciensts say

I’ve done that myself. Take a forked sck, push one piece into the sand and rotate the other piece and you get a perfect circle. And there are the imprints of the guy’s knees while he was drawing the circle. Or a woman – or child even.

The find was made near Sll Bay by Charles Helm from Nelson Mandela University and Andrew Carr from the University of Leicester, who are part of a team that has spent 15 years studying ancient tracks on the southern Cape coast that date back to between 70,000 and 400,000 years ago.

Before finding these paerns, the sciensts had found ancient human tracks in the course of their research, some at a site in the Garden Route Naonal Park and two in Goukamma Nature Reserve.

One site had 18 tracks, the other 32. Because the tracks were different sizes, they believe family groups could have made them.

A few years ago the sciensts found another rock paern near Sll Bay that consisted of grooves forming a big triangle, each side about a metre long.

They say our human ancestors must have drawn the triangle in sand between 91,000 and 143,000 years ago.

Worried that it would be damaged by wave acon, they organised for it to be airlied by helicopter to the Blombos Museum of Archaeology in Sll Bay.

They regard it as “one of the most important rocks in the world: it takes us back to our roots as a species and indicates the kind of ‘proto-art’ we were capable of creang so long ago.”

Why did ancient people make these paerns? Was it art? Or just someone having an idle moment on the beach and doing what so many of us do today?

We shall probably never know

Perhaps we should accept what writer Edward Albee said: “Creavity is magic. Don’t examine it too closely.”
