A Petrol-Head Dassie

As I write this, there is a dassie in the engine of a car parked somewhere at Noetzie, which may or may not get out and make a new home for itself

It is a long way from its former home, about 500km or so. Sound strange? Well it is rather.

The story goes like this. Karen and her husband, who live in Knysna, drove to Cape Town last Thursday and stayed with friends in Sunningdale near Blouberg. On Saturday morning they drove to the Hout Bay market, and then returned to Sunningdale.

Before they le for Knysna on Sunday they stopped at a petrol staon to fill up.

Karen’s husband opened the bonnet to check the oil and water

“I saw his expression and knew there was something wrong.”

There was. A dassie was sing on the engine.

It quickly disappeared and they decided it must have got out underneath and run away. Off they drove, home to Knysna.

Karen can’t be sure where the dassie came from, but thinks it must have been at Hout Bay which is close to the mountains.

They arrived home, unpacked and thought they ought to make certain the dassie had gone.

“We opened the bonnet and it was sing on top of the engine. We couldn’t believe it. With all the noise of the engine, the heat, and the long drive, it had stayed there.

“As soon as it saw us it dashed down into the depths of the engine.”

Karen lives on a smallholding with grassy fields, but no koppies or rocks that might make a new home for the dassie.

“Thinking that The Heads and Coney Glen are full of desirable rocks and crags, where the prospect of ‘re-homing’ was good, we immediately drove to The Heads and aempted to flush it out of the engine – with no success.”

Next morning they checked the car engine again: no dassie. Aha, it must have snuck off in the night.

Relieved, Karen drove to work and parked in the street.

“About half way through the morning one of my colleagues called me. There was the dassie on the grass next to my car, sing in the sun.”

When they approached, the dassie hopped onto the front wheel and disappeared up into the engine.

Karen started making calls. No one had any soluon for geng the dassie out.

Apparently it is not as unusual an occurrence as one may think.

When Karen phoned CapeNature they knew about dassies geng into engines, and had previously tried several mes to capture and remove a dassie from an engine without success.

Then Karen contacted Julie Gosling and they decided to give the dassie the possibility of a new home at Noetzie. It is quiet and there are other dassies.

So that is where she has parked her car today.

“Poor lile guy. I’m so glad he is not injured or burned by the heat of the engine. I am really hoping that it is quiet enough for it to leave my car and find its own lile life outside.”

And that is where I must leave the story – unl next week.
