Everest: 70th Anniversary of First Ascent

Mount Everest, the highest place on this earth.

I understand its lure, the desire to stand on its summit, of being on top of the whole world, looking down at the splendor of icy mountains stretching as far as the eye can see.

May 29th marked the 70th anniversary of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s first ascent of Mount Everest.

I remember my mother telling us that when the news broke in 1953, neither man would say who had reached the summit first. They had made a pact not to. So forever aerwards it was both men who were the first to reach the top.

I like that. Comes from an era before the “me” generaons.

Everest has only been known by that name for a relavely short me, called aer George Everest, surveyor-general of India during Britain’s colonial rule.

It has two ancient names: Tibetans call it Chomolungma, meaning “mother goddess of the world” and Nepali call it Sagarmatha, meaning “goddess of the sky.”

Tibetans and Nepali both refer to it as female and see it as being a deity, whereas the colonial Brits simply gave it a man’s name, probably because he was the first to survey the Himalayas.

Sherpas, a group of ethnic Nepali who act as guides to climbers, show humility to Sagarmatha and never speak about “conquering” this mountain as foreigners do.

In recent years there has been a fair bit of cricism about the commercializaon of climbing Everest, with some saying Sherpa guides risk their lives dragging novice climbers to the top, people who would not have made it on their own.

It’s a risky venture. More than 16,000 people have aempted to climb Everest: 5,633 have succeeded and 310 people have died.

Of these, 35% were killed by falls, 22% died of extreme exhauson and 18% from altude sickness.

Some may remember when the body of Brish mountaineer George Mallory was eventually found on the slopes of Everest. He was an excellent mountaineer. Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine went missing in 1924 while climbing Everest. They were last seen about 250m from the summit.

In 1999 a team recovered Mallory’s frozen body. His name tag, G Mallory, was clearly visible on the inside of his shirt collar. Mallory had massive injuries. His right leg was broken, right elbow dislocated, several ribs were fractured and his torso sll had mulple cuts and bruises. His broken climbing rope was sll around his waist.

Wiki writes that the “indentaon marks caused by the rope tugging on his skin were sll observable. Undoubtedly he had fallen.”

I remember a journalist asking Mallory’s son if he thought Mallory may in fact have been the first to climb Everest.

He replied that Mallory had believed that geng to the summit of a mountain was not all that maered; it was also about geng down again.

Stascs bear this out: 84% of all deaths on Everest were during the descent.

I end with a quote from Mallory that has always delighted me. A reporter asked him why he wanted to climb Everest. Mallory replied: “Because it’s there.”
