Last Friday was the United Naon’s World Bee Day and several stories about bees crossed my path.

One TV feature was about an Ozzie trucker and beekeeper who every year moves his hives to a remote and ancient forest in western Tasmania where his bees feast on the nectar of the leatherwood blossoms for the few weeks that the trees are in flower

He drove his truck and trailers, loaded high with beehives, for hours, and then had to negoate a track that got narrower and narrower as it ploughed deeper into the leatherwood forest. He eventually offloaded the hives in a clearing and the bees did their thing.

Honey from the leatherwood trees is one of the rarest in the world and has won many awards, including the Best Honey in the World. Fascinang creatures, bees.

About 75% of the world’s crops that produce fruit and seeds for human consumpon depend on animal pollinators. That apple you munch, or almond you crunch, came into existence because bees pollinated the apple and almond blossoms.

It is esmated that this “service” of pollinang crops - provided free by bees and other pollinators - has a global value of $577 billion a year

When most people think about bees, they think of honey and hives, but only about 10% of bee species live in colonies and produce honey An arcle in The Conversaon said most live solitary lives and make no honey.

Many bee species dig nests in the ground, or take over abandoned beetle burrows.

In the tropics there are even “vulture bees” that eat rong meat. What I found fascinang is that bees are intelligent. Researchers found that bees could learn to fly through a complex maze by following a trail of coloured markers. Once the bees had learned the way, they could do so even when the markers were removed. So bees can acquire spaal memory in those teeny brains of theirs. Sweet, man.

Bees are problem solvers. The Conversaon arcle said researchers have shown that bumblebees could be trained to pull a string connected to a plasc disk to get at the sugar water inside. And handle this: other worker bees that were in a cage watching these bees did exactly the same once they were released. They had learned by watching the other bees.

But bees are in trouble worldwide, and many bee species are declining. The biggest causes are pescides and the loss of their natural habitat.

So what can we do? Scrap pescides in our gardens and plant a variety of indigenous flowers for bees to feed on, which will also be food for other insects and birds.

As for lawns, the arcle says lawns are like deserts to insects. Nothing to eat, and lile place to shelter.

If you really want to help bees and nature, dig up some of your lawn and replace it with wildflowers. The wilder your garden, the more it becomes like a lile ecosystem.

And if you don’t have a garden, plant flowers in pots.

LEAKING PIPES?

DON’T REPLACE, RELINE!

Corroded pipes? Constant blockages from root intrusion? Shifted pipe joints causing leaks?

Is a pipe replacement difficult or impossible?

That is no problem, there is a better way!

Nu Flow is able to reline leaking, broken and damaged pipes using an array of epoxy resins for different applications to rehabilitate the inside of such pipes to a better than new state. So why re-pipe when you can reline with Nu Flow?

PIPE RELINING ON PRESSURIZED WATER SYSTEMS

STEP1

The pipe is tested for leaks

STEP2

An abrading agent is air blasted through the pipe to remove all rust and corrosion products.

STEP3

An epoxy mixture is the blasted through the pipe with conditioned air to uniformly distribute the epoxy lining through out the pipe segment.

RESULT

The result is a relined pipe, repaired from the inside. No damage to structutes! No chasing walls! No digging!

PIPE RELINING ON NON-PRESSURIZED WATER SYSTEMS

STEP1

An inspection camera is send down the pipe to reveal blocked and damaged areas.

STEP2

The pipe is cleaned with a cutting tool.

STEP3

Afelt liner impregnated with epoxy is pulled into place. Within the liner is an inflatable bladder When the liner is in place the bladder is inflated.

STEP4

The epoxy is left to cure.After curing the bladder is removed leaving behind a structural “pipe within a pipe”
