Guess what we saw this morning?

An oer trong along Noetzie beach. It stopped where the river runs into the sea, lay down and seemed to be eyeing three Egypan geese near the river mouth. Early lunch?

The geese clearly did not want to feature on the menu and marched towards the oer, which got up and troed into the sea.

This wonderful sighng came aer seeing three fish eagles perched on Noetzie’s forest trees - mom, dad and teenager - and it brought home to me how very lucky we are in Knysna to have this wonderful nature around us.

It is, of course, what draws tourists to Knysna, and tourism underpins Knysna’s economy

Sll feeling upbeat I got home and opened my email. Top of the pile was one from Knysna Business Chamber that said the municipality’s dra budget, with the high price hikes in rates and services, was “totally unrealisc .….. spells economic disaster and will lead to business closures and job losses”

My upbeat mood was gone like a puff of smoke.

“The ratepayers in Knysna have been baered by Covid and load shedding - with increased costs and less business - and then high inflaon applying further pressure. This budget will exacerbate business closures and increase the already high unemployment in our town,” the Chamber wrote.

Covid was indeed a very hard me for Knysna businesses. A town based on tourism, with tourism at a standsll. Some businesses just went under.

Then rolling blackouts – with no end in sight. Some businesses close their doors during load shedding, others fork out huge amounts of money for generators and diesel.

All this coupled with food prices that are crazy. Seems to me what I paid for a trolley load a few years ago, now buys a basket full.

Then on top of all this, Knysna residents get a proposed average 33% increase in rates.

The Business Chamber wrote: “The 33% increase proposed in the budget will drive exisng - and new - business away from Knysna, to the detriment of the community.”

I went to look for proposed rates increases in other areas. BusinessTech wrote two weeks ago that several cies were facing “alarming” tariff increases.

It listed some proposed increases in property rates: Joburg 5.3%; Pretoria 5%; Cape Town 1.1%; Gqeberha 5%; East London 8% and Durban 8.9%.

None of them came anywhere near Knysna’s proposed rates increase of 33%.

Property Wheel’s newsleer in March says it is realisc that businesses will move to new places in the near future “given that many companies are increasingly financially constrained in a stagnant economy, and with many councils implemenng above inflaon rates and tariff increases, while services and infrastructure deteriorate”

You all know the saying: “Don’t kill the goose that lays the golden egg”. It has been used oen as a warning against allowing unsustainable pracces to destroy the natural environment.

It sort of fits here too: don’t squeeze residents who are already baling financially because of the Covid aermath, load shedding and across-the-board price hikes.

Many are just keeping their heads above water. A 33% rates increase may just sink them.
