And do you watch a lot of television?

If so, here’s what you should do: switch off the telly, put on some music and start dancing. See how your brain gets sharper Okay, perhaps not right away, but if you dance oen enough, it will certainly sharpen your wits.

If you carry on being a TV couch potato, oooh dear. The grey maer will take a dive.

Sound a bit dodgy? Well, it’s actually true, according to several studies.

First, telly-watching. One Brish study followed 500,000 people who were between the ages of 37 and 73 when they were recruited for the study in 2006. Harvard Medical School news writes that researchers ran various mental tests on them including prospecve memory (the part of the mind you use to remember to do an errand on the way home, for example); visual-spaal memory (eg remembering a route that you took); fluid intelligence (problem solving) and short-term numeric memory (keeping track of numbers in your head.)

They also recorded other things like how many hours a day these individuals watched TV. They found that those people who watched a lot of television every day scored lower in all the brain tests.

Five years later they repeated the tests and made a startling discovery. They found there had been a decline in all the brain test results among those people who watched a lot of TV. So the telly-bingers had scored lower at the start of the research and five years later their results were even worse.

Researchers say this does not prove that television is bad for cognive brain funconing – but the clear link suggests that it is.

Back to dancing. Studies have shown that dancing improves brain funcon and boosts memory. Astonishingly, researchers have also found that dancing is associated with a 76% reduced risk of demena.

The reason dancing is so good for the brain is because it uses many different parts of the brain at the same me. It also boosts the connecvity between the right and le brain and, very importantly, dancing smulates proteins in the brain needed for healthy brain nerves, which can then create new nerve connecons to change and adapt.

And then there is music. Research shows that music acvates some of the most diverse networks in the brain. All these different parts of the brain have to work together for us to be able to interpret a whole cluster of sounds as music. You may think you are just chilling listening to music, but your brain is working hard.

So if you combine music with dancing, your brain is geng a really good workout.

Isn’t that great? That something as simple and pleasurable as dancing to music can actually keep your brain “fit”?

If you’re young, you probably dance quite a lot. If you are old, chances are you need to dust off those dancing shoes. So crank up the music and get going.

And if anyone asks what you are doing, you can confidently reply: “My brain exercises.”

Pre-qualification applications are hereby invited from experienced Exempted Micro Enterprises (EME’s) or Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSE’s) located in local area, as sub-contractors for SURFACING OF GRAVEL ROADS IN THE KNYSNA NORTHERN SUBURBS PHASE 2A (BALIE AND OF SETHOSA STREETS).

The proposed Work Packages involves the construction of paving, kerbing, stormwater pipes, headwalls, guardrails and installation of retaining walls using prefabricated blocks. Only contractors with an active CIDB contractor grading designationCIDBGrade 1CE,2CE and 3CE will be eligible to tender

Bidders are advised to note that preference will be given to contractors that have never benefited from projects of similar nature under the Knysna Municipality in the past provided that they meet the requirements set out in (i) to (vii) below.

Only companies that comply with the following requirements will be eligible:

i. Must be an EME orQSE

ii. at least 51% owned by black people;and

iii. theContractor has no equity holding in;and

iv is registered in terms of the Company’s Act, 2008 (Act No 71 of 2008) or Close Corporation Act, 1984 (Act No 69 of 1984);and

v. is registered on the NationalTreasury’sCentral Supplier Database (CSD);and

vi. is a sub-contractor who undertakes work within its registeredCIDB category.

A compulsory information briefing meeting will take place on Thursday, 04 May 2023.
