Stormy Conservancies

That was some storm last Friday hey!

Felt as if we were in monsoon country with the force of the wind and rain.

At Noetzie we had water streaming under the doors, while neighbours had guers broken, roofs damaged, verandah blinds ripped out and a solar panel blown off. A telephone pole came down and an electric fence was in taers.

The terns were right! A big storm was on the way.

So, too, were the climate change sciensts: extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more intense, and will get worse in years to come.

But here is something heartening. Some of you may know about conservancies. For those who don’t, conservancies are areas of private land where adjacent landowners join together in a voluntary associaon to manage the land in a way that promotes conservaon.

It really is a great idea. So much of South Africa’s remaining natural areas are on private land, so what landowners do on their land can have a big impact on our natural environment.

Being a conservancy doesn’t necessarily mean you have to change your land use. If you are a group of farmers, you connue to farm, but agree to do so in a way that causes the least environmental harm, while encouraging wildlife to flourish.

The first conservancy was established in KZN in 1978. Today there are 750 in South Africa, covering about 3 million hectares. Some of these are right here on the Garden Route. Noetzie Conservancy is one.

Last week I was chuffed to aend my first annual Garden Route Conservancy Forum meeng held in Boggamsbaai.

It was interesng and educaonal listening to other conservancy representaves discussing their successes and problems.

We heard from the Nature’s Valley Trust that they are using acousc recorders aached to trees to monitor birds in the forest. What great technology. They have also employed four men to clear alien vegetaon, combining job creaon with conservaon.

“One of our problems is when builders come, so do the snares.”

The Great Brak River Conservancy raised funds to buy a R60,000 wood chipper. They employ people to cut down aliens, but the biggest cost was geng rid of the felled trees. The wood chipper solved that problem.

Fransmanshoek Conservancy employs a full me ranger who, with two trainees, monitor 21km of coastline, do bird and game counts, rescue stranded turtles, do alien clearing and respond to calls from the community.

“Some of the tannies just like to talk so they phone us and say things like: ‘We’ve got a tree that’s moving funny.’ So we go along and they make us coffee and chat and then we go and they’re happy,” Erich Goold said.

“And every encounter is an opportunity to raise environmental awareness .”
