Woke up this morning to the most glorious day.

No wind, no rain, just sunshine pouring down on Noetzie beach.

Sipping my morning cuppa I watched baboons foraging for mussels on the rocks, seagulls taking a bath in the river mouth and a cormorant drying its wings.

The forested hills were shining green, the rocks a beauful orangebrown and a sunbird iridescent green and red.

Another day in paradise.

It is spring de tomorrow and we could feel the power of the waves as we swam. The river was cool as we dived in, washing off the salt and sand. High above I heard a fish eagle cry

We are so lucky to be here and I hope it never changes.

But it probably will.

The United Naons released a report today that showed how the natural world was changing in a way that would have a bigger impact on civilizaon than anything experienced before.

Climate change.

The report is from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) summarising the latest informaon about climate change science, its impacts and what we can do to avoid the worst of it. It is designed as a guide for governments to take acon, mainly by slashing carbon emissions, but also by developing our cies, transport and agriculture in a way that minimizes climate change.

Climate sciensts told us years ago that there was already so much carbon in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels that we could not avoid some climate change, but if we limited global warming to 1.5°C, we could avoid the worst of it.

We don’t have much wiggle room.

The average global temperature is already 1.1°C warmer than it was before industrialisaon. This has led to an increase in extreme weather: heat waves, rain, wildfires, cyclones, floods and droughts.

Countries need to slash carbon emissions to zero by 2035, and triple the speed of shiing to renewable energy

We need to transform agriculture. Around 25% to 30% of global greenhouse emissions come from our food system. Of this, 14.5% comes from livestock farming, of which nearly two-thirds comes from cale, both dairy and beef

Global transport accounts for around 21%.

As UN secretary general Antonio Guterres said today: “The climate me-bomb is cking.”

Too big for you to do anything about?

In some ways yes, but there is a lot individuals can do. Install solar panels. Cut down on eang beef and dairy. Arrange carpools and walk when you can. Use only low energy light bulbs. Turn your geyser down to 60°C. Compost your kitchen waste instead of chucking it in the bin. Rong vegetable maer in landfill sites releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composng doesn’t. Keep your clothes and cars for longer. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

As former US president Barack Obama said: “We are the first generaon to feel the effect of climate change, and the last generaon who can do something about it.”

I look out over the beach, probably the same as it has been for thousands of years.

With climate change and rising sea levels, who knows if it will sll be here in 30 years.
