Fish Without Fishing 26 January 2023

I am sure most of you have eaten fish – but I doubt many have eaten fresh fish delivered to you on the beach by the ocean.

It is one of nature’s strange happenings, hard to believe if you have not seen it.

At Noetzie we get what we as kids called “a cold current”. You would wake up one morning and discover the sea was freezing!

We later learned that this is known as “upwelling” Upwelling happens at Noetzie aer a strong south-easter that pushes the surface seawater offshore, causing cold water from the deep to rise up.

This cold water is full of nutrients from all the dead plankton etc, which “ferlise” the surface waters. Some areas have “upwelling ecosystems” so rich in nutrients they support many of the world’s big fisheries.

Although upwelling ecosystems account for only one percent of the ocean surface, they yield about 50% of the world’s fish caught.

Back to Noetzie. I remember early one summer morning, during one of these cold upwellings, running along to the beach with siblings and cousins, astonished and delighted to see the wet sand covered with dead fish. We had never seen anything like it. Big fish, lile fish. It was nature’s fish market – free.

With buckets and basins we collected fish for Africa. It was so excing!

It was the first me we had seen this, but my grandfather, who had been at Noetzie since a child, said it happened from me to me, especially if the “cold current” was parcularly cold.

All the fish were perfect, just had to be gued and scaled.

We had fried fish and pickled fish, fish pie and fish cakes. Delicious.

So what caused the fish deaths? Some say it is because of the sudden temperature drop, which affects the metabolism of the fish. Others say that it is a lack of oxygen. While the deep, cold water is rich in nutrients, it is apparently low in oxygen because the bacteria that feed on the dead plankton and fish on the seabed consume a lot of oxygen. Some fish are caught in pockets of water with lile oxygen and suffocate.

Whatever the reason, this no longer happens here at Noetzie. We sll get upwelling, but the ocean no longer delivers piles of fresh fish to the beach. The reason is no mystery: many of our fish stocks are depleted from over fishing, and some have collapsed altogether.

The report in 2020 on the status of our fisheries found several stocks to be good, like hake and some linefish stocks like snoek, hoentot, carpenter, santer, slinger, roman and yellowtail.

But stocks of silver kob, geelbek, and white stumpnose are depleted.

Some fish stocks have collapsed: red steenbras, seventy-four, dusky cob and dageraad. Galjoen, our naonal fish, is now listed as “near threatened”

This is not just from commercial fishing, but from subsistence and recreaonal fishing too.

Scary to think these fish have disappeared in my lifeme. Will we be able to stop it?

Conservaonist Enric Sala takes a dim view: “The ocean is like a cheque account, where everyone withdraws but nobody makes a deposit.”
