Sunbirds, Ozone and Hair Clippings

I was sing having my morning cuppa outside when a lile sunbird ﬂew down and perched on the rim of my mug.

I was astonished and delighted! It dipped its lile beak into my rooibos tea, paused, dipped again and must have decided “ugh, no sugar” and ﬂew oﬀ

It was a lovely interlude, especially aer I had been reading all the depressing morning news: load shedding for the next two years, bombing in Ukraine, plane crash in Nepal, ﬂoods in California, food prices rockeng. Hoo boy!

The lile sunbird did more than take my mind oﬀ horrible news. It made me think about our natural world, which led to my remembering the good environmental news I had read.

For a start, the ozone hole in the atmosphere is gradually closing. Ozone is a wonderful gas high up in the stratosphere that absorbs most of the dangerous radiaon from the sun before it hits the earth, so we really need it or we would all fry.

The problem began when we started making chemicals called chloroﬂuorocarbons, CFCs for short, for use in fridges, air condioners and aerosol cans. These CFCs rise up in the air and eat away at the ozone layer

When sciensts realised this, they were extremely worried. Apart from an increase in skin cancers and a devastang eﬀect on plants and crops, this high radiaon would also kill plankton in the ocean. Plankton is the base of the ocean food web, so if it dies, the enre marine ecosystem would collapse.

Not only that, but plankton produce 50% of the oxygen in the world, so if they ceased to exist, our oxygen would halve.

Sciensts and world governments got together in Montreal to tackle the problem. The Montreal Protocol was born in 1987, whereby the world agreed to phase out ozone-eang CFCs.

I read this morning that the ozone layer is gradually healing. It will taken another 40 years before it is back to what it used to be, but we are geng there. That was great news.

Another bit of good news was that certain rich countries have ﬁnally come to agreement, aer two years of discussion, on the details of an $8.5bn donaon to South Africa to catalyze our shi from coal to renewable energy. Excellent!

First thing they need to do is upgrade the electricity grid. There are private companies queuing up to build wind and solar power plants in SA, because we have great sun and wind resources, but if they cannot feed that electricity into the aging grid, there is no point. Excing to see a big chunk of money going towards renewables. Let’s hope the donors have a ght rein on accountability for where that money goes.

And this one ckled me: a Belgian company is collecng hair clippings from hairdressers and making it into maed squares. These are used in drains to soak up oil in water before it reaches a river or the sea. One kilogram of hair can absorb eight litres of oil. What a clever invenon.

There is good news around us. It took a beauful lile sunbird to remind me.
