What Will 2023 Be For You?

I read something today about New Year resoluons that rather appealed to me, wrien by a columnist in the UK.

She wrote that just aer midnight on New Year’s Day, in the heart of the English winter, she felt an urge to take oﬀ her clothes and leap into the icy sea.

“I followed my impulse, took the very cold plunge, and emerged minutes later in my undies, shivering and exhilarated.”

Now that might just sound like one of the crazy things people do aer a rollicking New Year’s party, but in fact this woman was giving eﬀect to her New Year’s resoluon.

She said she had made so many resoluons over the years which she had never stuck to, so in 2023 she decided to do something diﬀerent which she hoped would be easier to achieve.

“My only New Year’s resoluon is to grasp life and opportunity rather than overthink and under-do,” she wrote. I think that is a lovely idea, similar to the idea of “carpe diem”, a Lan phrase made famous by the 1980s movie Dead Poets Society. Its literal translaon is “seize the day”, urging us to make the most of the present.

How many of us really do that? It seems to me we spend so much me thinking about the past or the future that we forget to appreciate the here and now. I know I do.

So trying to “live in the moment” is one of my resoluons this year.

I also want to do those spontaneous things that I usually only think about doing.

For instance, something we used to love doing as kids when we were swimming in the Noetzie River was to run out of the water when we got cold and roll in the hot sand, then lie on our tummies feeling the warmth through our cozzies.

I have oen wanted to do that as an adult, but then I think of people seeing this woman rolling around in the sand and I am sure they will think I am nuts. Or worse will take a video and put it on social media – hê hê.

But taking a leaf out of that columnist’s book not “over think” things, I have made a second resoluon to be spontaneous more oen. (So you may well see me rolling around in the hot sand at Noetzie at least once this year.)

My third resoluon is rather diﬃcult: to move away from anger and pessimism. Living in this country, surrounded by so much corrupon, violence and ineﬃciency, we oen feel anger, hatred or despair - feelings that make us feel worse.

As the Dalai Lama says: “Anger is the ulmate destroyer of your own peace of mind. Choose to be opmisc. It feels beer.”

Well, easier said than done, but I resolve to give it a bash.

And then there is the advice from Dr Seuss, which is prey good to start oﬀ a new year: “You’ll never be bored when you try something new. There’s really no limit to what you can do.”
