It’s summer holidays and most of you will be relaxing aer a hard year Beaches, braais, beer and bubbly, and chilling with your friends and family

Some of you might have had such a tough year with load shedding and rockeng prices – not to menon exposés of even more corrupon among our leaders – that you may have gone into goblin mode.

Goblin mode? The expression may be old hat to those who are on social media a lot, but I learned about it only today when I read that it had been selected as the Oxford Word of the Year.

Publishers of the Oxford Diconary have been selecng a Word of the Year for ages, but this is the first me they selected one I had never heard of.

Here is the definion: it refers to “a type of behaviour which is unapologecally self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectaons.”

As one person remarked: “We used to call them slobs.”

But there is more to the phrase than just being a slob.

The publishers say the phrase was first seen on Twier in 2009, but went viral on social media in February 2022 and has made its way into newspapers and magazines.

According to Casper Grathwohl from Oxford University Press, the usage of “goblin mode” increased at a me when Covid restricons were being lied in many countries and the phrase “captured the mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to ‘normal’ life.”

It also captured the mood of people who were increasingly rebelling against the “unaainable aesthec standards and unsustainable lifestyles exhibited on social media.”

Well, not surprising that people are rebelling. I learned only recently that there are apps that people use to change photographs of themselves so they look preer, or thinner, or have bigger boobs, change their faces, their height, they hair etc, and then they post them on social media. Shame man, that’s quite sad. Also a bit disturbing, nê?

Last year’s winner for Word of the Year was “vax”

In 2020 the Oxford publishers had been unable to choose only one winner as there had been so many good contenders. The award went to a range of words, including lockdown, bushfires, Covid-19, Black Lives Maer and WFH (working from home).

As this is the Silly Season, no Stoep Chat would be complete without including at least one odd news item. Here is a really sweet one.

A young girl in the US called Madeline is mad about unicorns and really hopes to find one, but she was worried that the Los Angeles authories may not allow her to keep a unicorn in her back yard. To make sure, she wrote to the local authority to ask for permission to keep a unicorn “if I can find one”

The local authority wrote back granng her the very first unicorn licence – subject to certain condions. The unicorn had to have “ample exposure to sunshine, to moonbeams, and to rainbows.”
