Florence Erasmus retired as Chairperson of the Friends of the Knysna Libraries Committee in September 2021, at the age of 90! She had worked tirelessly, giving many years of service and dedication to the committee and the libraries, with the emphasis being on the purchase of ‘mother-tongue’ books for early childhood reading.

Florence was a great grandmother and the matriarch of a very close-knit family. She was a strong, capable and caring person with a great sense of humour She was admired by all who came into contact with her and it was a pleasure to work alongside her on the committee.

Jingle Tills!

Christmas is around the corner and the pressure is on to buy, buy, buy! Jingle Tills, as they say.

Makes me think of a story about Christmas gis that really made an impression on me as a child. It was called The Gi of the Magi by O.Henry.

The story, set in the early 1900s, is about a newly married couple that were very much in love, but were poor.

The lovers had only two valuable possessions: one was Della’s stunningly beauful hair that reached to her knees, and the other was Jim’s gold fob watch that had belonged to his grandfather.

O. Henry writes that had the Queen of Sheba lived in the flat opposite, Della’s magnificent hair would have put the queen’s jewels to shame. Had King Solomon lived in the basement with all his treasure, he would have envied Jim’s beauful fob watch.

As Christmas approached, Della wanted to buy Jim a Christmas present. She had been saving pennies here and there out of her housekeeping money for months, but all she had managed to scrape together was $1.87. She paced up and down trying to think of a way to get enough money to buy Jim a gi.

Then she had a brainwave. Her hair! She could cut it off and sell it, which she did, and was paid $20.

She had fun searching for the perfect present for Jim, and found it: a beauful gold chain for his fob watch. She was delighted.

When Jim came home on Christmas Eve, he was dismayed to see Della had cut off her hair. Slowly he took out a package and gave Della her Christmas present.

She opened it and inside were two wonderful tortoiseshell hair combs, the tops studded with gems. Della had oen admired them in a shop window, but had never thought she would own them. And now she had cut off her hair, so could not wear the combs.

She shed a tear, but then held them to her heart and said: “My hair grows fast Jim.”

Then she jumped up, fetched Jim’s present and held it in her palm.

“Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.”

Jim looked at fob chain and smiled.

“I sold my watch to get the money to buy your combs.”

The story ends there.

As kids listening to this tale, we were miserable.

“That’s a sad ending,” we told our mom, who had read the story to us.

My mother smiled and said it was not really sad, because the story had shown Della and Jim’s great love for each other by their “sacrificing their greatest treasures” for one another at Christmas.

Christmas has been heavily commercialised for decades and adversers gradually increase the pressure to buy gismostly stuff that no one really needs.

We could take a leaf out of the Dalai Lama’s book: “If you want to come to this Christmas celebraon and bring a present, the best present you can bring is a peaceful mind. If you can make such an offering, with true love for one another, that is enough.”
