Shoes For Penguins

I read an intriguing news item about an African penguin in a Boston aquarium that has been given a pair of custom-built sandals to help the old bird walk.

The 24-year-old penguin called Beach Donkey - probably because African penguins make a sound like a donkey braying - had developed a painful foot condion called bumblefoot with large calluses on its feet.

Instead of gently euthanizing the geriatric penguin, they embarked on a “mul-faceted treatment plan”

First the penguin had surgery to remove the calluses. Then came the cute bit: they made her a pair of ny shoes designed to reduce the pressure on her feet while she healed.

She was soon waddling around without stumbling.

Then came a second round of surgery, followed by foot care.

Before all this, they wanted Beach Donkey to be comfortable with all the human handling and so worked out what to give her for rewards. They decided that because she was a curious penguin she might like to see the rest of the aquarium so took her on tours, holding her up to look at the displays.

“She seemed to really like the opportunity to explore that aquarium,” the penguin trainer said.

And now Beach Donkey is ﬁne, has Happy Feet again, and no more need of her shoes.

This story made me think. On the one hand I liked the fact that the penguin had been cured and ckled by the video of her waddling along in her funny sandals.

On the other hand, I was struck by the amount of money, me and experse that was spent on just one bird that was very old, could not breed anymore and was essenally just a public exhibit.

Would that money not have been beer spent on helping African penguins in the wild?

African penguins really need help. They are endangered and experts say they could become exnct in 35 years.

They occur only along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. Their numbers have plummeted from around 2 million a hundred years ago to just 20,000 today. The causes include large-scale egg collecon and guano mining last century, devastang oil spills and overﬁshing.

Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town has launched #NotOnOurWatch.

They want the government to give penguins the highest conservaon protecon possible and to implement a plan of acon for their protecon.

They are calling on us to “be the voice of the penguin”.

“You need to let decision-makers know that this is a priority and important to you. You need to say that you won’t let the African penguin become exnct,” the aquarium says.

On reﬂecon, perhaps it is good that the US aquarium put me and money into saving the geriatric penguin. It will in no way swell the numbers of wild African penguins, but it would do something equally important: raise awareness about these threatened birds in a country where people cannot see them in the wild.

As Senegalese forest scienst Bab Dioum famously said: “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”
