Greta: Climate Talks Just “Green-Washing”

Have any of you seen that lovely video with the teenaged climate change acvist Greta Thunberg being interviewed by UK comedian Russel Howard?

It is not oen one sees Greta laugh – the climate crisis is hardly the stuﬀ of merriment - but she does it oen here.

Like when Russel asks her how she copes with stress. Looking sheepish, she replies: “I eat beans one at a me.” The audience packed up and so did she. It started when she was crossing the Atlanc in a yacht to reach the US. (She never ﬂies because of the huge carbon emissions from aircra.) She did not have much to do on board, so she started eang beans one at a me to pass the me. She realised it was quite soothing so now it is her an-stress pracce.

The interview centres on Greta’s new book: The Climate Book. Many people ask her to recommend reading material so they can learn about climate change. Greta found there was no single book that gave a good overall understanding of the climate crisis, so she decided to create one herself.

Most of it is not wrien by Greta. She invited 100 sciensts and others to share their experse by wring diﬀerent chapters, including “people who are experiencing ﬁrst hand the consequences of the climate emergency”.

It is also a call to acon.

What makes this topical right now is that the United Naons’ climate change negoaons, COP 27, started in Egypt this week. These talks, which are meant to work out ways for all naons to cut carbon emissions drascally to keep the world from cooking, have been held every year for 27 years – and have achieved very lile.

I covered COP 17 in Durban in 2011. At ﬁrst it was quite excing, but in the end, disappoinng. No big deal came out of it. Lots of talk and promises, lile acon.

Greta reached the same conclusion. She has aended several COP talks and addressed the delegates herself, making hard-hing statements, but this year she decided not to go.

She said in the Guardian that the climate talks were simply a chance for the powerful to get away with “green-washing, lying and cheang”, and that the talks between governments are not addressing the climate crisis.

In one of her speeches Greta said of the annual COP talks: “Of course we need construcve dialogue, but they have now had 30 years of blah, blah, blah, and where has that got us?”

She is right.

A few facts: The Word Meteorological Organisaon says the past eight years are the warmest on record; carbon emissions reached record levels in 2021; sea level rise has doubled in the past 30 years; and this year’s extreme heat waves, droughts and ﬂoods have aﬀected millions of people and cost billions.

And fossil fuel use connues to increase.

If those in power won’t take the acon needed to curb the climate crisis, what can the individual do?

Says Greta: “Join the movement. Help organise. We are millions around the world, but we need billions. In order to change everything, we need everyone.”
