Ever wondered why people carve scary faces on pumpkins at Halloween?

Well, according to an old Irish legend, there once lived a nasty character called Sngy Jack. When he died neither heaven nor hell would accept his soul, so he was banished into perpetual night. To give himself some light, Jack hollowed out a turnip and put a burning coal inside. He roams the Earth to this day carrying his turnip light – Jack o’ Lantern.

So how does that link with Halloween?

Well, therein lies a longer tale. Apparently Halloween’s origins come from the ancient Celc fesval of Samhain, dang back about two thousand years. It was held on what would be November 1st in our calendar of today. This day marked the end of the northern summer, the end of the harvest, and the start of the Celc new year

The Celts, who lived in Ireland, Britain and northern France, believed that on the night before new year, October 31st, the lines between the living and the dead became blurred, and the spirits of the dead were able to return to the world of the living.

To ward off these spirits, the Celts lit bonfires and put candles in hollowed-out turnips and potatoes, carved with frightening faces, around their houses and in their windows. There were no pumpkins in Britain and Europe in those days. People also dressed up in ghoulish clothes to scare off spirits.

And the name “Halloween”?

Well, the Church did not hold with pagan fesvals, so it cunningly designated Chrisan holy days on the same dates as some of the pagan fesvals. In the 8th century Pope Gregory III made November 1st a day to honour saints – All Saints Day. The evening before was also designated as holy, or hallowed, and was called All Hallowed Evening. Over me this became Halloween.

It was the Irish selers who took Halloween to the US, along with many other of their tradions.

Two million Irish immigrated to the US to avoid starvaon in the Great Famine that lasted from 1845 to 1849. The famine was caused by potato blight that infected potato crops all over Europe. The Irish were parcularly hard hit as the potato was their staple food. Over a million Irish died of starvaon and disease. North America is the home of the pumpkin, so the Irish selers began to use these for Halloween instead of potatoes or turnips.

“Trick or treat” apparently comes from the old Scosh, Irish and north England custom of “guising” - disguising oneself in fancy dress, oen with a mask, and going from house to house to recite poems or sing in exchange for food. Immigrants took that to the US too.

Some startling stascs: The US spends $10 billion on Halloween sweets, and the average US child consumes 1.5kg of sweets on Halloween, equal to 3 cups of sugar

I like US comedian Rita Rudner’s remark: “Halloween was confusing. All my life my parents said: ‘Never take candy from strangers.’ And then they dressed me up and said: ‘Go beg for it’”
