Up Africa 12: Namibia

I love the Caprivi. When you are along the river, you are in a green oasis. Move away, and you are in dry thornveld. I love them both.

We camped on lush green grass on the banks of the Kavango River, with noces warning campers to beware of hippos and crocodiles, but aer being in unfenced campsites for two months, we hardly turned a hair

It is a tough place for the locals. Just geng water to those villages is a mission. You see people with six or seven water containers on a donkey, or ed onto bicycles, travelling long distances along hot, dusty roads between the river and their villages.

We were heading for Epupa Falls and took the route through Swartbooisdri along the Kunene. When we looked across the river, we were looking into Angola.

I loved that trip. Just miles and miles of no one, real wilderness. And we saw the Zebra Mountains! They are curiously striped mountains, with what looks like dark scree strips interspersed with strips of pale vegetaon.

It was a slow drive and by the me we set up camp 200m from the Epupa Falls we were too pooped to do anything but crack open a beer.

The falls are beauful, with dancing rainbows in the spray Next day I sat on the hot rocks for a long me, loving the sound of the crashing water

This is the Kaokoveld, home to the Himba, many of who sll live the nomadic life. Like the Maasai in the north, many Himba sll dress in tradional clothes, the women with elaborate “dreadlocks” covered with buerfat and ochre, which they also rub on their bodies.

Because of the tourists at the falls, many Himba women have stalls selling their cras, beauful bangles and bowls. Next stop Etosha. It was hot - 38°C at Okaukuejo - and not a blade of shade at our campsite.

The water hole next to the camp made up for it. Man, you can sit in the shade of a tree for hours and watch elephant, giraffe, jackal, wildebeest and masses of other antelope come down to drink.

But the best sighng for me was the first night we were there. I wandered along with my binox and there was a black rhino standing right at the water’s edge. Within 20 minutes another one arrived and then another. By the me I le, seven black rhino had visited the water hole. I was so stoked.

We had spent two months travelling the game reserves of Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana and one in Kenya, and we never saw a single rhino. In some countries they have been wiped out altogether And here in front of us there were seven. I almost got tears in my eyes, I felt so proud of Namibia. They don’t have many resources, but they have fought the poachers and although rhino are sll threatened by poaching, Namibia has viable rhino populaons.

Then came the long road home. What a trip. What fantasc experiences. I hope you Stoep Chaerers have enjoyed reading some of the highlights.
