Up Africa 11: Back in Zambia

Lovely Zambia. It was a long, hot drive from Malawi, so it was a delight to pitch camp in the cool riverine vegetaon next to Pelican Lagoon in Zambia’s Luangwa River Valley

I sat on the deck in the shade of an enormous red mahogany tree, absorbing the silence aer hours of raling and banging along potholed roads.

As the sun sank red and fast, as it does nearer the equator, two elephants emerged from the trees and wandered down to drink, their reflecons perfectly mirrored in the water. A sight like that makes your soul sing.

One of the camp aendants was Francis Bwalis, who I discovered used to work for the legendary Zambian conservaonist, Norman Carr. I had met Norman over 20 years earlier, when we stayed with the family, and we had a great me reminiscing about him.

Our camp was just outside the South Luangwa Naonal Park, where we saw herds of buffalo, elephants, stacks of antelope, a hyaena and a flock of brilliant carmine bee-eaters. The sky was a whirl of pink and turquoise as they swarmed overhead.

It was on the airstrip in this park that Zambia’s last rhino was shot dead. By 1998 rhino were declared exnct in Zambia, once home to about 12 000. Happily some rhino have been recently re-introduced into the Northern Luangwa Park.

One aernoon I was reading back at camp when a herd of elephants walked by. They were so close I could smell them. A bit horsey, like stables.

Then I heard a crack and turned to see an elephant right at the deck, trunk up high pulling branches off the red mahogany. I got up slowly and went to join the others on the deck. He didn’t like that. Stopped, looked at me and shook his head.

“Quickly, come here behind the bar,” camp manager Rowan said. It was an astonishing experience. The elephant was about four metres from us, just beyond the deck railing.

As he stretched his trunk up to grab a branch, I could see right into his mouth, his molars and his pink palate. His boom lip was quite pointed. I never imagined I would see into the mouth of a wild elephant and live to tell the tale!

Meanwhile a troop of baboons scampered among the elephants, scratching in their droppings for tasty dbits.

I love the Luangwa Valley. It is one of those special places that I hope never changes.

Can’t say the same for the Victoria Falls. We walked across the border bridge at Livingstone to see the falls, which were as magnificent as ever, but the number of tourists has rocketed, and their loud shrieks and never-ending posing at every viewpoint was a bummer

If you have never seen Vic Falls, do see them. But if, like me, you visited them decades ago, when there were just muddy paths through the rain forest, not concrete walkways, where there were no queues at metal turn-sles and where you could hear the thunder of the falls without humans shrieking and jostling for that selfie, then rather hang on to those memories.

And so on to the Caprivi.
