Up Africa 10: Malawi

We rushed through Malawi, which was a pity, but luckily I had spent a month travelling around Malawi in my twenes.

I travelled on buses with a backpack and wore dresses, as President Banda did not allow women to wear trousers. I had a brilliant me back then.

This trip we had a tough me at the Malawian border. We had been warned about it.

First the border officials would not accept our SA Department of Health Covid vaccinaon cerficates because their system “could not read the scan”. Oh please. Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya had no problem, so why did Malawi?

They would not accept our cerficates showing that we had tested negave at the Tanzanian border because they did not accept rapid test results for Covid.

“So we have a problem,” they said.

We would have to travel back to Tanzania’s capital, take a different test, wait three days for the results, then return.

We said we could not do that.

“Mmm. So we sll have a problem.”

They rocked back on their chairs and we stood waing.

Eventually they said if we each paid them $40 each they could do a rapid Covid test themselves. We did not point out that they had just said they did not accept rapid test results, but we did say $40 was way too high. Tanzania had charged us only $10. They sat for a bit and then said: “Okay, $20 each.”

I looked at the UN signs all over the shabby health marquee and wondered if the UN had donated these test kits to Malawi.

But border officials have you cornered so we paid, the guy did the tests (no gloves) and said we were negave.

I asked for an official receipt. The chap said the form he had given us was a receipt. There was nothing on it about the $20 payment.

Then came geng the vehicles through customs. Aer over two hours of waing for the vehicle papers to be returned, Paul got irritated. He was told:

“This takes me.”

So we sat and sat.

The border closed at 6pm. At about 5.45pm I decided to call their bluff.

“It doesn’t maer if you can’t finish,” I smiled. “We have camping stuff and can sleep outside like the truck drivers.”

Wide eyes on the other side of the glass.

A few minutes later we got our papers and went through the border.

Now the funny thing is that Malawi had a fuel crisis, apparently because the country had run out of Forex. Many of the petrol staons were totally dry. (We had jerry cans so were okay.) Tourism is an obvious way for Malawi to earn Forex, so why on earth do the border officials make it so difficult for tourists?

One woman who ran a campsite said she had repeatedly told the tourism department about the border problems.

“They just say: ‘That is not our department’”

We met four UK tourists travelling down Africa who said they had decided to skip Malawi because of border hassles.

Such a pity.

It seems beauful Malawi is shoong itself in the foot.
