Africa 9: The Great Lakes

Aer a long, hot drive we came to a town called Musoma on Lake Victoria. We were looking for a place to stay and asked an old man herding a cow. He gave us direcons and then said to Greg: “You’ve got a new model VW. Very nice.”

We were surprised. Turns out he had been a mechanic for Volkswagen all over East Africa.

We followed his direcons and came to the shores of Lake Victoria, the second biggest freshwater lake in the world. I fell in love with it.

We laughed oﬀ camping that night and splashed out on lovely rooms right on the lake.

Africa’s Great Lakes are part of the Great Ri Valley system, and are magniﬁcent. Beauful to look at and an economic resource for the countries that border them, both because of ﬁshing and for the water trade routes between them.

Lake Victoria is massive: 69,484 sq km with a shoreline of over 3220 km – a bit longer than the coast of South Africa. It is also the main source of the Nile.

We later camped at Mwanza Yacht Club on Lake Victoria (which has reciprocity with Knysna according to my KYC membership card!) a peaceful retreat aer a hecc day in Mwanza, Tanzania’s second biggest city

Kigoma, a port on Lake Tanganyika, was our next stop. It is 677 km long, the longest fresh-water lake in the world.

If you visit Kigoma, stay at Jakobsen’s Beach, named aer the Norwegian who set up the campsite and chalets. It is lovely

Strangely, there is no beach.

“Ah,” Mr Jakobsen said. “The water level has been rising since 2016 and has now covered the beach.”

We were assured that there were no crocs, hippos or bilharzia, so next morning I went for a swim. It was wonderful. Birds singing, ﬁsh eagles calling and ﬁshermen in dugouts hauling in their nets.

I did feel a tad nervous. Once you have seen enormous crocs devouring a carcass, that image stays forever

I heard Paul shoung up at the camp. A monkey had swiped his toast oﬀ the gas toaster. Singed ﬁngers were apparently worth it.

Kigoma and the nearby town of Ujiji have a horrible history Both were transit centres for many thousands of slaves captured from as far away as the Congo. From here they were force marched 1,200 km to the east coast and Zanzibar. Anyone who became ill was le behind, sll shackled.

Ujiji is also where New York Herald journalist Henry Stanley ﬁnally tracked down David Livingstone, who had “disappeared” on one of his expedions to Africa. No one had heard from this strongly an-slavery missionary and explorer for several years.

We visited the spot where they had met in Ujiji, and Stanley had uered his now famous words: “Dr Livingstone, I presume.”

It was only here that I learned that Livingstone had apparently replied with a simple: “Yes.”

That really ckled me.

There is some dispute about whether Stanley really did use those exact words. No maer really. They were both amazing men – and it made a beer headline, nê?
