Up Africa 8: Maasai Mara
We saw part of the wildebeest migraon! We had come to Maasai Mara Naonal Park in Kenya, just across the Tanzanian border, in the hopes of seeing the migraon in acon, but when we got here everyone said: “The wildebeest are already here!” No one had seen any animals migrang for two weeks. The wildebeest migraon goes on throughout the year as the herds follow the rains in and out of Tanzania and Kenya. It is a magnificent spectacle, but apparently can be quite gruesome at the river crossings because crocodiles lie in wait. The big cats also follow the herds and in just one day we saw the remains of five wildebeest carcasses from lion kills. Although we did not hold out much hope of seeing the animals on the move, our first two days in this lovely Maasai Mara were great. We saw masses of animals and birds. Then one morning as we drove along under a cloudy sky, we saw a stack of wildebeest gathered in one spot. There must have been a couple of thousand. They all just stood there, facing the same way, not grazing. Then suddenly there seemed to be movement at the front. “They’re crossing the river! Quickly, let’s go to the other side!” I said as they disappeared into the riverine bush. And there they were, running down the bank, through the water and up the other side. They had cleverly chosen a part of the Mara River that was very narrow and shallow. No crocs could get them there. We were glued to our binoculars. It was an amazing sight. Once across the river they formed into a long line that seemed to go on for ever, walking two or three abreast unl they disappeared into the distance on their way south. We were thrilled! We had witnessed a small part of the largest mammal migraon in the world, an ancient phenomenon that had been part of Africa for thousands of years. We saw more wonderful sighngs that day. A serval crossed the road in front of us and suddenly stopped, one paw lied. It crept forward and pounced. It caught a fat rodent that it quickly chewed and swallowed. Not a tail le behind. Later we stopped to watch a group of hippos – and saw an astonishing sight. An enormous croc suddenly whipped over onto its back and twirled around in the water with a mighty splash, and as it did so, we saw it had a hippo carcass in its jaws. I had read that crocs do that to rip bits of meat off their prey, but had never seen it. It was fascinang in a macabre way. The area was full of crocs, some lying on the rocks, others feasng on the hippo carcass. They had eaten most of it already, and just the head and front part of its body remained. As if that were not enough for one day, we saw five lionesses lying on the side of the road, licking each other lazily.
