The swamp vegeta on gave way to a vast lake. Was like looking across False Bay. At camp the thieving vervet monkeys were a pain. There is a wrought iron “cage” around one ea ng area, but the younger monkeys slip through easily. One French boy yelled in dismay as a monkey swooped down and scooped up his breakfast pancake right off his plate. Shame, but we could not help laughing. And now on to the town of Mto wa Mbu, which means the river of mosquitoes in Swahili. Oh dear.
One tricky thing about Tanzanian parks is that there are almost no signposts, possibly because local tour guides, who know the place like the backs of their hands, drive 95% of visitors in vehicles. That leaves we few “self-drives” at a bit of a loss. We decided to follow one of these vehicles. He led us to a lion kill from the day before, and the lions were s ll there. We could not see them at first, as they were hidden by the river bank, but eventually one stood up and yawned and we had our first lion sigh ng outside South Africa. I loved all the massive baobab trees. Many were so big they must have been hundreds of years old and most were deeply scarred from elephants ge ng to the water these trees hold inside.Thepark is home to three endangered animals found nowhere else in the country: the fringe-eared oryx, greater kudu and the ashy starling. I spo ed only the ashy starling – but was s ll chuffed.Oneday we went south to the swamps, and what a brilliant sight it was. Emerging out of the dusty thornveld we looked down at a vast plain of green, with herds of buffalo and elephant grazing knee deep in the swampland.

5: Tarangire National Park 8 September 2022 #155 I woke up to the sound of rustling. I crept out of my tent and shone the torch around. Nothing. I went across to the loo and when I came back I froze. Not more than 100m away an elephant was feeding off one of the trees in the campsite. That was the rustling I had heard. And right next to her was her calf. What a sight! We were in Tarangire Na onal Park, one of Tanzania’s smaller parks covering 2,600 sq km, which nevertheless teems with animals and has the largest elephant popula on in the country Like all Tanzanian parks, it is not fenced, neither are the campsites.TheTarangire River flows through the park, with huge trees and palms along the banks and herds of elephant, buffalo and 545 species of birds. A new one for me was the “superb starling”, a magnificent bird with a bright orange belly and iridescent blue and green back. Aptly named. Away from the river the bushveld is dry and most of the trees are bare in this the dry season. S ll, herds of zebra, wildebeest, elephant, buffalo and giraffe feed here.
