Another place that really impressed me was Isimila Na onal Park. You probably all know that east Africa was the cradle of humankind, but knowing it and seeing the hard evidence is something else. Seeing a stack of ancient hand axes spread out in the hot African sun is quite thrilling, knowing that “cavemen” held those very tools in their hands between 300,000 to 400,000 years ago.Then there are the magnificent pillars, huge needles of stone that have been formed by erosion. I am just loving Tanzania.
Just got back from having a cold Safari beer across the road at an open-air restaurant and bar in Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma. Thumping music and a trendy DJ, with soccer showing on big screen Tvs. A far cry from the quiet of the Ruaha Na onal Park last night. Actually, there was one sound that made my hair stand on end. It was a piercing scream that I learned was a bushbaby. I could not believe such a cute li le creature with adorable big eyes could create such a ghastly sound. Ruaha is 20,226 sq km, one of the largest na onal parks in Tanzania – and apparently the least visited. It might have something to do with the 80km of spine-shaking, corrugated dirt road you take to get there. But it is worth it. Ruaha is vast and varied, with savanna, bushveld, swamp, Miomba forest and lots of majes c baobab trees. It is the old Africa that has all but vanished except for protected areas. Ruaha is named a er the Great Ruaha River, the lifeblood of the park, which now, in the dry season, is only a trickle. In the rainy season the river is apparently a gushing torrent.Ithasthe densest popula on of lions in the country, but we did not see any. I did not mind, as I have been lucky enough to see many in South African parks. I always remember what one ranger told me years ago: “To be in the wilderness is a privilege; to see wildlife is a bonus.” But we saw a lot. There are fat hippos and crocs lolling in the pools, impala, kudu, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck and elephants all overAnd I saw my first tree dassie! We had stopped at a picnic site and as I walked over to a big ficus tree, I saw a li le face poking out of a hole in the trunk. So cute. We were lucky as tree dassies are nocturnal and shy.
