My word! You can be driving along a tarred road with a few potholes, then eventually they join together to form craters and then suddenly the tar disappears altogether and you are driving on bare red earth, bouncing along un l suddenly you are back onto pot-holed tar.
I like the way truck drivers signal that their vehicle has broken down. Instead of the li le red warning triangles you see in South Africa, they cut down branches and lay them on the road, warning drivers there is a sta onary vehicle up ahead.
There are small towns and villages all along the roads, and one can see that most of the people are fairly poor – yet there are no beggars. Everyone is out there doing something: herding goats, repairing bicycles, carrying water, selling vegetables or ferrying huge sacks of charcoal by bicycle.
I crept out of my tent just as Zambia’s birds started their dawn chorus and walked through the sleeping campsite to a secluded pool: the Kapishya hot springs. I slipped into the warm water and lay back, the bubbles from the spring breaking gently against my skin. The spring is on the Shiwa Ngandu estate, a fascina ng place established in the 1920s by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne from England. Some of you may have read about him in the book Africa House. We walked around Gore-Browne’s old estate with its now rather tumble down white-washed houses with slate roofs, and a huge estate office with an imposing clock tower. It was incongruous to see the remains of an English country estate in this remote spot in Africa. I really wanted to visit the old Africa House itself, but it was closed. One thing I will never forget about Zambia are the roads.

It is not uncommon for one guy to have two 50kg sacks of charcoal hanging down both sides of his back wheel and another two on the front. How they balance is amazing. Apparently a 50kg sack sells for around R35. All that work to make and transport charcoal for so li le money – but op ons of earning a living are Wlimited.ehave been impressed with the vegetables Zambians sell on the roadside. The tomatoes are delicious, be er than most in SA, and so are the peas, cabbages, carrots and sweet potatoes. As we moved closer to the Tanzanian border we began to see motorbikes. It seems that three-up on one bike is quite common. What really took the cake for me were two guys on a motorbike with an enormous pig between them. It had its feet ed together and lay across the lap of the guy on the back. I did feel a bit sorry for it, but then again, is being transported in a truck any be er? And so, on to Tanzania.
