Now, 28 years later, the place had hardly changed. I was delighted to find we were the only people staying there. The rus c Pontoon campsite is on the edge of the Kasanka River under huge red mahogany trees. We climbed up to the wooden lookout and saw a herd of puku and a group of the secre ve, “semi-aqua c” sitatunga antelope, with specialised hoofs for living in marshes. Wonderful sight. Above us was a troop of small, yellow primates we later found out were rare kinda baboons. We were surprised when the campsite caretaker, David, asked us when we wanted to shower, then realised it was because he had to heat water over a fire. Then he climbed a ladder and poured the hot water into a container on the roof. Voila - a hot showerWerose in the dark the next morning to go on a guided walk with Simon who was a mine of informa on. I saw my first Schalow’s turaco and Bohm’s beeaters. So stoked! The park has 480 species of bird. We were escorted by Henry carrying an AK47, as the elephants are some mes tetchy because nearby villagers chase them away from their crops. It was wonderful walking through the wilderness without another person in sight. Later we took a boat trip up the Luwombwa River. Not much wildlife, probably because of the noisy motor, which conked out halfway. Luckily there were paddles, so Henry (who doubled as the boatman) paddled us back. Hard work, but he would not let usKhelp.asanka is a gem. I hope it never changes.
