Learning to Live with Wildlife I was at a Ward 9 commi ee mee ng some weeks back when the issue of raiding baboons was raised. I was a li le shocked to hear one commi ee representa ve say there were only two solu ons: translocate the baboons or kill them.

There has been conflict between people and wild animals since humans first started farming. This issue has escalated globally as the human popula on balloons and people move further into wild areas.

Where elephants used to forage in trees, farmers have hacked down the trees and planted crops. So the ellies eat the mielies and the people want to kill the ellies.

As the land for leopards decreases, so does their food, so they prey on sheep.

Water is becoming scarcer in many parts of Africa because of climate change, and rhino, buffalo and elephant congregate at the shrinking water holes. People who depend on that water want them killed because their livelihoods are at stake.

So it goes on. An en re area of exper se has arisen because of this – Human Animal Conflict – and much research has been done on the subject.

Happily, many solu ons have been found.

In the Cederberg they use Anatolian sheep dogs as “shepherds” to keep leopards away.

In the Kwando Zambezi Transfron er Park lions were preying on ca le, so people killed the lions. One pride was slashed from 15 to only three in a year.

Then specialists in human-wildlife conflict raised funds and built 27 lion-proof kraals.

And closer to home, a friend in Hunters’ Home built a cheap but effec ve chicken wire “cage” around her veggie garden. Voilà!

No baboons.

Someone in the Overstrand invested in a couple of solar panels to power an electric wire around his gu ers. No more broken gu ers from baboons swinging on them.

At Noetzie we have foiled baboons and monkeys that raid bins with simple and cheap solu ons. We drilled holes on the lid and bo om of wheelie bins, kno ed rope in each, ed on a wooden toggle that slipped through a loop in the lid rope. No baboon has managed to open them.

I hate burglar bars, but the reality is most people need them. We use those transparent strips that you hardly no ce. No baboons get through them.

And we don’t leave fruit near windows, so baboons can’t “window shop”. We keep it in a cupboard.

In the Cape Peninsula baboon monitors chase baboons out of affected suburbs. The Cape Town council uses a specialist company, which is expensive, but with some expert input, could local Knysna people not be trained to do the same?

I am not saying I have the answers to baboon management. I am sugges ng that communi es come together with specialists and work out a way forward.

Remember Steve Irwin, the crazy Ozzie crocodile man? I did not always like his style, but I did like what he did in educa ng people about conserva on.

He was also a realist: “We humans s ll have a long way to go with learning to live harmoniously with our environment and its wildlife.”

Let’s hope Knysna comes up with some innova ve solu ons about baboon management, rather than simply thinking: “kill them”.
