Don’t Pave Paradise Isn’t it great to toss away those Covid masks?

And no more restric ons on gatherings! Yippee, so happy for Knysna, which depends on tourism.

So roll on Oyster Fes val, Forest Marathon, Pink Loerie Mardi Gras, boa ng, hiking, whale watching and beach-going.

Knysna’s natural beauty is its draw card, and all the ac vi es that can take place in its magnificent forests, on the stunning estuary, its beaches and coastline.

Seems to me Knysna is slowly realising the natural environment’s true worth.

I was struck by this first when I a ended public mee ngs in 2019 about the town’s dra Spa al Development Framework (SDF), run by Knysna Municipality’s former planning director Marlene Boyce.

The SDF is a “blueprint” of how the town will develop in the next five years.

It said Knysna’s “spectacular scenic beauty” was of “na onal significance and interna onal renown.”

True, but what was even more important was this: it recognised that Knysna’s natural beauty was not just something nice-to-have, but was a “na onal economic asset.” Yes! But only, of course, if planning and development are handled properly.

And we humans have a pre y bad track record in that regard. Many places in the world that were once beau ful have been totally messed up by human greed. Tourists come because it is beau ful, people rush in to maximise tourist dollars, and soon the place is wall–to-wall hotels, malls, concrete and glass.

And then the tourists stop coming.

I remember one provincial government minister saying there were places in Spain where they were pulling down huge hotels to try to regain the picturesque seaside town that had been destroyed by bad development – and which destroyed tourism with it.

As the old Joni Mitchell song says: “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘ ll it’s gone; they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

The Spa al Development Framework puts to bed that old fashioned, 1980s argument of “development versus environment”. You s ll hear it: “You can’t stop development because of the environment.”

Oh please man! The world moved on from that silly argument decades ago. What ma ers is sustainable development: development that allows us to meet our needs today, without doing anything that means future genera ons won’t be able to meet their needs. That means preserving the natural environment and natural resources.

Knysna’s framework recognises this – but will the municipality put it into prac ce? Some local councillors totally get it, but there are some that clearly don’t.

Luckily Knysna has some really good officials in the municipality’s environmental and planning department, like Pam Booth, whose understanding of sustainable development is equal to that of any officials I have met in the big metro municipali es. This bodes well for the implementa on of the SDF and Knysna’s future. A report is only as good as its implementa on, and Pam and her team have what it takes.

So ja: with the scrapping of Covid restric ons, Knysna’s tourist economy is sure to bounce back.

This gives Knysna Municipality and businesses scope to turn the SDF into a reality.

But first they all seriously need to get to grips with it.

Because “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘ ll it’s gone.”
