Mystery of the Giant Phalluses “I am staring at about a dozen, eight-foot high, orange-red penises, carved from bedrock and semi-enclosed in an open chamber.”

This was the start of a fascina ng ar cle in The Spectator about mysterious archaeological ruins in southeast Turkey called Karahan Tepe, between 11,000 and 13,000 years old.

That age is extraordinary, not only because the ruins are older than most other structures - the Great Pyramid is 4,500 years old - but because the ruins are older than the Neolithic Revolu on, that great leap forward when stone age people changed from being huntergatherers to being farmers.

Archaeologists had believed that once people took to farming, it gave them more free me so could start new ac vi es like building se lements, making po ery and crea ng art. The start of civiliza on.

But the discovery of Karahan Tepe changed this thinking. It was built long before agriculture, before people made po ery or metal tools, before there was any sort of “civiliza on”. Its creators were s ll stoneage hunter-gatherers.

That is quite extraordinary.

It also had shrines, cells, altars and “audience halls”.

Karahan Tepe is not alone. It is about 45km from Gobekli Tepe, discovered by archaeologist Klaus Schmidt in 1994.

Schmidt believed that Gobekli Tepe was the world’s oldest temple.

It has huge carved pillars in a circle, with two massive T-shaped pillars in the centre, weighing between seven and 10 tons. Some are carved with lions, foxes, scorpions, leopards and vultures.

Schmidt said the discovery of Gobekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe had “upended” our view of human history.

“We always thought that agriculture came first, then civiliza on.

But here it is reversed. It seems the ritual centre came first, then when enough hunter gathering people collected to worship – or so I believe – they realised they had to feed people. Which means farming,” he said in the ar cle.

So farming came a er these astonishing structures were built. This is backed up by the thousands of wild animal bone fragments that have been uncovered, many with cut marks on them, showing that the builders of Gobekli Tepe had hunted and butchered these animals at the site, so were s ll living as hunter-gatherers.

A really strange thing is that many carvings show people with six fingers.

And they had booze. Archaeologists found troughs that had traces of fermenta on in them.

When the builders of these huge stone structures later turned to farming, they had the perfect place to do so. The area was part of what became known as “The Fer le Crescent’ – now the Middle East – and in those days was lush and well-watered.

Then some me in 8000 BC an extraordinary thing happened. They were purposely buried under tons of rubble and lay entombed for centuries.

Were they buried by the descendants of those who created them, or by others? And why? No one knows.

And the giant penises? Again, no one knows why they were built – or if they were in fact meant to be penises.

The Spectator ar cle suggests the ancient people may have gathered there for elaborate manhood rituals.
