Deal Dumping a Death Blow Sunday marked 50 years since the United Na ons declared June 5 World Environment Day. I was a bit slack about doing something good for the environment on Sunday, but some friends did a sterling coastal cleanup along a very rocky, pathless area to the east of Noetzie. The four of them filled three big bags with rubbish, mostly plas c, and carried four big plas c items too large to go into a bag. That’s not easy over rocks. Really well done.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day was Only One Earth. It seems obvious to say that, but it is equally obvious that we behave as if we didn’t know it.

It must have been depressing for the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to celebrate the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day and see what li le progress we have made.

The world is hea ng up from all the fossil fuels we burn, which has increased the frequency and intensity of heat waves, floods, fires and droughts. PE is running out of water. KZN was hit by devasta ng floods twice within a few weeks.

Globally it is just as bad.

Sure, we have made strides in renewable energy, but fossil fuels are s ll by far the biggest producers of energy worldwide. Electric vehicles have become a reality, but most vehicles s ll use petrol or diesel.

We have made laws against destroying the environment, but the number of wild plants and animals is declining and our land becoming degraded.

Last year over 10,000 sq kilometres of Amazon forest was hacked down – half the size of Kruger Park.

And pollu on just grows.

The UN boss said the “growing de of pollu on and waste is cos ng some nine million lives a year”.

In SA we have laws to prevent illegal dumping, but take a look at the Noetzie Road to see how these are working. Trucks have started to dump their building rubble there and the heap is growing. The Knysna Municipality went to inves gate a er I alerted them, but unless they catch someone in the act of dumping, they cannot prosecute.

Further down the Noetzie Road is another illegal dump that has been there for years. A ci zen caught a Knysna company dumping on camera recently and the municipality issued the company with a fine.

So Knysna needs to crack down on dumping before it gets out of hand – but it needs the community to help. It is not just to make the place look neat. It is to stop the harm it does to the natural environment, which in turn harms people.

Most people have cell phones. Take a pic of anyone you see dumping anywhere and send it to the municipality.

If enough people are fined, it will make a difference eventually.

Our cleanups, recycling and cracking down on dumping may be a drop in the ocean of our environmental problems, but if each of us looks a er our own patch, we can make a global difference.

As Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of though ul, commi ed ci zens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
