Creatures Great and Small There is something awe-inspiring about driving in the bush and seeing a group of elephants crossing the road.

There is something rather scary when the biggest one stops to stare at you, then starts walking towards your vehicle in a rather determined way.

“Reverse, reverse!” is my backseat squawk.

We do, but s ll the elephant comes on.

More reversing un l – whoa! – two minibuses of tourists appear behind us and block our way. What now?

Suddenly the minibus drivers pull out and drive straight towards the big jumbo. Oh no!

And then… nothing happens. Whew. It just headed off into the bush.

This happened on our wonderful three-day trip to Addo Elephant Na onal Park last week, and what a great me we had. We saw masses of elephant, kudu, eland, zebra, hartebeest and buffalo, and were very lucky to see an aardwolf.

The aardwolf is nocturnal, which is why this daylight sigh ng was so exci ng. They live on insects, licking up about 250,000 termites in a single night. That is one busy tongue.

Their favourite termites o en become scarce in winter, so they have to eat harvester termites instead. These are ac ve in the a ernoon, so one is more likely to see an aardwolf in the day during winter.

Ah, and those baby ellies! Man, I could just cuddle them.

We saw a group of elephants, one adult and four sub-adults, crossing the road quite fast and then heading up a track into the bush.

They soon crossed back again, but this me they had a baby ellie with them. It must have wandered off and the mama and her teenaged helpers went to collect it. Loved that.

When we came across a par cularly huge herd, we switched off and listened. We could clearly hear them make very deep rumbling sounds. Apparently these rumblings are one of the ways elephants “talk” to each other.

Elephants hear the rumblings with their ears, but can also pick them up through the ground as vibra ons. The interes ng thing is that the rumblings travel much further through the ground than the air, so elephants can “talk” to each other through ground vibra ons up to a kilometre away. Astonishing.

And we loved Addo’s flightless dung beetles, which are now endangered. There are road signs telling drivers that dung beetles have right of way.

Flightless dung beetles used to be widespread in South Africa, but are now restricted to small pockets of protected land, with the largest popula on in Addo.

We watched them rolling balls of elephant dung bigger than they were. They eat the dung and lay their eggs in the dung balls.

People always thought flightless dung beetles preferred elephant and buffalo dung, but recent DNA research found that they eat the dung of at least 16 different animals, including poo from mice and rats. No one knew that before.

Addo is a gem. Sad that so many animals that once roamed free throughout South Africa, have been almost exterminated by humans.

But good that there are game parks where some of them are protected – and where we can s ll see these wonderful creatures, great and small.
