Tax Me Now say Super Rich Some mes I read news that makes me grin with glee.

So it was this week when I read that some billionaires are calling on governments to tax them more.

Thought it was a joke at first.

These super-rich people joined the protests at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, some carrying placards that said #taxmenow.

Well, well, that is a turn up for the books!

The world’s very rich meet every year at Davos – where only a select few can take part - and world government leaders are there hanging on their every word. Nothing talks like money, nê?

Now I do not begrudge people earning lots of money, but the spread of taxes should be fair too. And it is not.

Money is power and billionaires have managed to ensure that they generally pay some of the lowest taxes in the world. Where is the fairness in that?

A few of the world’s super rich have realised how unfair this is. One of them is Marlene Engelhorn, a young woman who is an heir to the founders of BASF, the biggest chemical company in the world.

The Guardian shows Marlene si ng on the ground with other protesters at the World Economic Forum, holding a placard saying “In Tax We Trust”.

She was quoted saying that world governments were doing nothing to address the huge inequality in the world and that it was me to “rebalance” the world.

“It’s me to tax the rich.”

Now if that had been said by one of the many protesters who were not rich, it would not be surprising, but to come from a really rich person makes one sit up.

“As someone who has enjoyed the benefits of wealth my whole life, I know how skewed our economy is and I cannot con nue to sit back and wait for someone, somewhere, to do something. I feel there is no op on le for us other than to take ac on.”

Bully for her!

Twi er has been ac ve on this topic. One tweet said the effec ve tax rate of Warren Buffet, worth $111 billion, was a mere 0.1%; Jeff Bezos, worth $131 billion, was 1.1%; Elon Musk, worth $210 billion, was 2.1%.

Meanwhile a registered nurse in the US is taxed 13.5%.

Those numbers say it all.

Marlene is a co-founder of the Taxmenow movement.

There is a similar organisa on in the UK called Patrio c Millionaires.

Phil White, a member of Patrio c Millionaires, said: “It’s outrageous that our poli cal leaders listen to those who have the most, know the least about the economic impact of the crisis, and many of whom pay infamously li le in taxes. The only credible outcome from this conference is to tax the rich – and tax us now,” he said.

Well, I am impressed and wish them success.

Wouldn’t it be great if all world leaders could embody the belief of one of the US’s great presidents, Abraham Lincoln: “These men ask for the same thing, fairness and fairness only. This, so far as in my power, they and all others shall have.”
