Whistleblowers It is a glorious autumn day in the Cape and we are on the stoep discussing the Zondo Commission.

Why spoil a lovely day with that, you might wonder.

The findings certainly are shocking, depressing, and some mes unbelievable, like a slightly far-fetched crime novel.

But the Zondo Commission also makes me hopeful.

And it answered many ques ons for me as a journalist. I remember wri ng about SA’s renewable energy programme, praised interna onally, but suddenly stopped by Eskom. Why? And wri ng about the crazy R1-trillion nuclear deal with Russia that was obvious SA could never afford. What was Eskom thinking?

Well, we know now, thanks to the Zondo Commission, that Zuma and his Gupta cronies had captured Eskom.

They almost captured the Treasury.

We heard submissions from former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene how Zuma had pressured him over the nuclear deal, and when he would not capitulate, had fired him and replaced him with a puppet.

Zuma had been “determined” to give control of the Na onal Treasury to the Guptas and it was “almost a miracle” that they had not succeeded, Zondo said.

The Zondo Commission certainly squeezed the worms out of both government and companies, but many of the bankers, accountants and lawyers who cashed in on state capture, got away.

So why does the Zondo Commission make me feel good?

First, because it shows that South Africa has enough incorrup ble people to ensure that the commission took place, and that it was open to the public.

Second, that it named those guilty of criminal acts and what they should be charged with.

Third, the whistleblowers: the men and women who risked careers – and some mes their lives - to speak out about the rot that had set in.

Thank God for them. They impressed me enormously and give me faith for South Africa’s future.

To do so while Zuma was s ll in power took a huge amount of courage.

One of the first state capture whistleblowers was Mosilo Mothepu, former CEO of Trillion, who resigned in 2016 and took her evidence to the former Public Protector.

In her book “Uncaptured” Mothepu writes that she had witnessed “industrial-scale loo ng, where public money was being syphoned from Transnet, Eskom, Denel, SA Express” that le her “petrified and horrified”.

“I had to do the right thing and tell the Public Protector.”

She started the ball rolling, but it came at great personal cost. She was treated “like a leper” by corporate SA and could not get a job because companies, instead of grabbing her because of her integrity, feared if they employed her they might lose government contracts. How sick.

Mothepu writes about her “own personal hell” a er whistleblowing, which took her years to get over.

“Right now I am out of that tunnel. The light is shining brighter.

South Africa is a be er place because of the story that I shared.”

People like Mothepu give us hope.

Imagine if each one of us could be as courageous as she was, and speak out about corrup on and wrongdoing, no ma er how big or how small.

What a different place our country would be.
