Bear Bones I want to tell you about another book I rediscovered while sor ng through my late parents’ books recently: Langebaanweg: A Record of Past Life. It brought memories flooding back of that windswept phosphate mine on the West Coast where colleagues and I used to sit for weeks digging up fossils of thousands of animals that had lived there five million years ago. It was painstaking work and o en tedious, crouched in cold, windy weather, unearthing hundreds of bone fragments. But every now and then something wildly exci ng happened, like the me I scraped my trowel over a huge bone, saw the unmistakable teeth of a carnivore, but it was unlike any I had seen before. What was it? I took a paintbrush to dust off the finer sand and stared at the jawbone. I knew that Bre , my boss working nearby, got extremely excited if we found any carnivore. He was also strict, and woe be de any of us who damaged a fossil. I called out to him: “I’ve found a carnivore jaw, but I don’t know what it is.” He was over in a shot, knelt and looked. “I think it is the jawbone of a bear.” We knew that Bre had uncovered bones he was pre y sure were bear bones, but as there were zero records of bears - living or fossils anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa, he was cau ous. The bones he had uncovered to date were all from the neck down, and only by finding the skull and teeth could he say for sure that the fossil remains were those of a bear. And there it was! I had uncovered the first fossil bear jawbone in Africa! I was thrilled. I started to scrape away more sand, but the tension of my boss si ng watching – equally anxiously – was eventually too much and I put down my trowel. “You take over. It is too much responsibility. The first bear ever recorded in Africa….” These fossils were not like those ancient fossils that have become like rock. These were s ll like bone, but the weight of the earth covering them had le many breaks and cracks and they were fragile. Excava on was a bit like a surgical opera on. That night we all had an extra glass of Tassies to celebrate. The fragmented skull was found later, and once it had been reconstructed, it turned out to be bigger than a polar bear, the largest land carnivore alive today. This guy was massive, weighing 750kg or more, and was exclusively carnivorous. It had long legs so could run fast when hun ng. Paleontologists say the ancestors of our West Coast bear entered Africa from Eurasia about 6 million years ago, and spread down to the Cape. What is puzzling is that no other fossil bears have been found elsewhere in Africa. Why not? Whatever the reason, I agree with Bre that the fossil bear “is undoubtedly the most impressive carnivore known from the recent geological past in southern Africa”. And I s ll like to think of it as “my” bear.
