Mysterious Easter “Gift” Easter Sunday is a deeply religious me for millions, but also a me of chocolate eggs and bunnies, and most of us overindulge.

The head librarian at Cambridge University received an Easter gi that had nothing to do with eggs and bunnies, and has brought great happiness to her and to many people around the world.

It was le in a pink gi bag in the library with a printed message: “Librarian. Happy Easter. X” Inside were two notebooks, worth many millions of pounds, which had been stolen from the library about 20 years before.

Charles Darwin had wri en them in the 1830s and they included Darwin's sketch of the famous “Tree of Life” that he drew when exploring the no on of evolu on, and the idea that humans and other species had descended from common ancestors.

Darwin had wri en above the Tree of Life sketch, “I think”. It took him many more years to perfect his theory of evolu on, published 20 years later in his book On the Origin of Species.

Who had stolen them, and who had returned them? So far, no one knows.

What they do know is that the notebooks, which were stored in a high-security strongroom, had been taken out for a photo shoot in 2000. It was only during a rou ne audit in 2001 that librarians discovered they were missing.

For many years they thought they may have been misfiled, but a search finally revealed that the notebooks had gone.

It was the biggest search ever in that library, which holds over 10 million books and manuscripts.

It was a massive loss. The BBC quotes a history of science professor who said the theory of natural selec on and evolu on was “probably the single most important theory in the life and earth environmental sciences, and these are the notebooks in which that theory was put together”.

The police and Interpol were involved but drew a blank.

Then in 2020 the library launched a massive public appeal around the world, which led to many ar cles and social media coverage.

The library supplied photographs of the notebooks, including the Tree of Life sketch.

Fi een months later they were mysteriously returned.

University librarian Dr Jessica Gardner told the BBC that she was “overjoyed”.

“They're safe, they're in good condi on, and they're home.”

Interes ngly, there was no CCTV camera on the landing where the bag was le . I would say the person who returned them had probably cased the joint for cameras beforehand.

There are other CCTV cameras and the cops are looking at that footage. Hope they find something. I would love to know the real story behind the the and return.

The library has jacked up its security significantly in recent years.

Good. Crazy that someone could just walk off with such valuable books.
