SIYA KOLISI’S MISSION We all remember that day in 2019 when South Africa beat England to win the Rugby World Cup. South Africans went mad with delight, seeing the Springboks make a comeback a er some dismal rugby years.

I am reliving that victory through Siya Kolisi’s engrossing autobiography Risen.

It’s a really good read and had me quite tense reading details of those knife-edge games.

On one level the book is the story of Kolisi's life from a very poor background in the PE township of Zwide, to being captain of the winning Springbok team On another level it is a window into the massive inequali es in this country, a legacy of apartheid s ll with us 28 years a er democracy, and an illustra on of the separate lives many millions s ll live. Kolisi lived just a 15-minute drive from PE but as a kid had never been there.

He saw his first person with blonde hair when he was 11.

Risen is also a story about how a few individuals can change a person’s des ny.

Kolisi was born in 1991. His mother was 18 and his father 15. He was brought up by his grandmother, who he adored. But mes were tough and Kolisi knew real hunger. He learned to sleep on his stomach to lessen the hunger pangs.

Like many kids from impoverished backgrounds with li le entertainment, Kolisi started drinking, smoking dagga and sniffing petrol when he was only eight. He believes he would have ended up in jail or dead.

“It was rugby that saved me.”

Enter the first person that changed his des ny: Coach Eric Songwiqi from the local African Bombers rugby team. He saw Kolisi’s poten al and this started “a chain of events that would change my life”.

The first was being selected for the Eastern Province U-12 team that led to being awarded a scholarship to Grey High School by an anonymous donor. He later discovered it was US philanthropist Vincent Mai, the second person to change Kolisi’s des ny.

A er school Kolisi joined the Western Province Academy, and then came the “Baby Boks”, the Stormers and finally the Springboks.

It was not all easy going, and Kolisi ba led with alcohol for years, and gives an honest account of this me.

Kolisi could have taken his rugby career overseas, but wanted to stay here, not only for rugby but to tackle “the big issues”. He is aware that his me in the spotlight won’t last forever, so wants to use his influence while he can.

He and his wife Rachel have established the Kolisi Founda on to try to make a difference in the lives of the poor, to fight gender violence and improve educa on.

Kolisi says he is red of being celebrated because he suffered but s ll managed to make it.

“Be inspired by those who defy the odds, sure, but also be angered and appalled that they had to face such odds in the first place.”

He will s ll play rugby, but his big purpose in life now is to help people as much as he can, “to make sure the next Siya doesn’t go through the same ba les that I did”.
