NOETZIE’S HIPPOS I was scratching through a pile of soil behind one of the Noetzie houses last week, looking for old bones.

Some may remember that I wrote about the prehistoric human skeletons that were uncovered (and almost destroyed) during construc on work at Noetzie castle about 15 years ago.

Well, there is another house being built at Noetzie and I thought I would see if there were any prehistoric bones where the guys had been digging. I found something that looked a bit like a big tooth.

I photographed it and sent it to a paleontology friend who thought it might be a rhino tooth.

Wan ng confirma on, I searched online for rhino tooth scholars and found a paleontologist at the University of Bonn. I sent him the pix and he replied that it was “without ques on” a hippo tooth.

Well, we were all rather ckled. Hippo at Noetzie!

I don’t know how old the tooth is, but I read recently that the last recorded hippo in the Eastern Cape was shot around 1795. It is unlikely that hippo in the Knysna area would have survived hunters’ guns any later than that, so it is probably at least 226 years old – but could be much older.

I wondered how it got to that spot behind the North’s Co age.

Did some of the prehistoric “strandlopers” kill it? If so, where are the rest of the bones? Or did they butcher it at the river and grill the meat there? Seems more sensible with such a huge animal.

Perhaps as the skeleton dried over me, children played with it and one child decided to keep a tooth and took it to play in the shade of the milkwoods. And as children do, she soon thought of something else to do and le the tooth behind. Who knows?

Only a few other bones have been unearthed at the site so far: seal, antelope and bird. Each must have a story as to how it got there.

Speaking of stories, do you know why the hippo fans it tails when it poos?

Well, when the creator made the hippo, it was designated to live on land.

“Oh, it is so hot on land. Please let me live in the cool water,” the hippo asked.

“No,” said the creator, “you are a very big animal and will eat all the fish.”

“I promise I will only eat grass,” replied the hippo.

“But how will I know that you won’t eat fish underwater?” asked the creator.

The hot and unhappy hippo went away and had a think. How could he convince the creator?

Suddenly he knew: “Oh creator, I have a proposal. Whenever I poo, I will fan my tail fast to spread out my poo and you can easily check to see if there are any fish bones in it.”

The creator agreed, and the hippo ran happily into the cool water.

And that is why to this day hippos fan their tails when they poo.

This story must be true because whenever I have come across hippo poo in game reserves, I have never seen a fish bone.

No ce is hereby given that the Annual Report (AR) for the 2020/21 financial year has been tabled at the Municipal Council mee ng, in terms of Sec on 127(2) of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003, (MFMA) on 24 February 2022.

The Annual Financial Statements for the 2020/21 financial year are a ached to the Annual Report as Volume III. In terms of Sec on 127(5)(a)(i) of the MFMA the Annual Report is hereby made public. Copies of the Annual Report are available for perusal at all the Public Libraries and Municipal Offices.

An electronic version can also be viewed on the Municipal website on www.knysna.gov.za.

The local community is invited, in terms of Sec on 127(5)(a)(ii) of the MFMA to submit representa ons in connec on with the Annual Report. The deadline for wri en representa ons is 13:30 on Friday, 18 March 2022. Furthermore, par es, bodies and individuals who submit representa ons are afforded the opportunity to address the Municipal Public Accounts Commi ee during its mee ng to be held before the next Ordinary Council mee ng.
