THE GREAT NURDLE HUNT GOES ON When I went for my morning swim at Noetzie on Monday, the beach was full of orange-suited people on their hands and knees.

Nurdle hunters. They are employed by a cleanup company to sieve beaches from PE to Saldanha Bay to collect millions of ny plas c pellets called nurdles. This is the second year of their programme and they are s ll finding plenty.

I first heard of nurdles a er that massive spill from a container ship in Durban in 2018 that put 49 tons of them into the sea.

Nurdles are used to make almost all plas c goods, and are shipped to plas c factories around the world.

In 2018 an es mated 350 million tons of nurdles were manufactured – apparently weighing more than the total weight of the human popula on!

We cannot live without plas c, but neither, it seems, can we manage plas c properly: an es mated 53 billion nurdles end up in the ocean every year.

Remember when the X-Pearl container ship caught fire in Sri Lanka last year? About 1,680 tons of nurdles washed into the sea, the largest plas c spill in history.

In some places the plas c pellets were 2 metres deep.

So why are they bad for the environment?

Nurdles have been called “toxic cocktails” because of the hazardous chemicals they contain. When they degrade, these chemicals are released into the ocean.

And like most plas c, they also a ract chemical pollutants that are already in the sea, and these s ck to their surface.

Many seabirds and marine creatures mistake nurdles for fish eggs and when they eat them, the chemicals are released into their bodies.

Photographs a er the X-Pearl spill showed fish with nurdles stuck in their gills. Dolphins, whales and turtles washed up dead with them in their bodies.

So nurdles in the ocean are bad news.

The astonishing thing is that although they are such an environmental threat, they are not classed as a hazardous substance, so are not subject to regula ons that control the transporta on of other hazardous substances.

Many organisa ons are now trying to get the Interna onal Mari me Organisa on to declare nurdles a hazardous substance so that handling of these pellets will be ghtened up.

So far, no luck.

This is where we come in. There is a UK organisa on called Fidra that has launched The Great Nurdle Hunt – and they are encouraging everyone in the world to take part. All you do is head to a beach with a sieve, collect all the nurdles you find, take a pic and submit your findings online.

No prizes, but something far be er: you will be part of a global movement that is mapping plas c pellet pollu on everywhere. Fidra has already taken some maps to show industry, and they want to keep going with more data.

So teachers, take your school kids to the beach. Parents, take the family.

Go to nurdlehunt.org.uk and add the Garden Route’s voice to this cause.

So many environmental problems leave us feeling helpless. This is one you can help tackle.

As Fidra says: “The more people taking part, the greater the pressure for industry to do something.”
