SOMBRE ORIGINS OF ST VALENTINE’S DAY Anyone remember ge ng their first Valen ne’s Day card?

I got mine in my first year at high school. Was quite chuffed, but a li le disappointed too because the boy had signed it and Valen ne cards were meant to be secret. You know how 13-year-old girls buy into that secret admirer idea.

I was cha ng about this on Valen ne’s Day and we wondered how it originated. Appears no one knows for sure, but there are some interes ng theories.

One is that the ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia between 13th and 15th February. It was meant to clear away evil and to harness fer lity.

Apparently priests sacrificed a goat for fer lity and a dog for purifica on. Horrible enough, but then the goat’s skin was cut into strips, dipped into its blood, and taken by the priests into the streets where women were whipped with the bloodied hide.

Some accounts say “gently slapped”, but I don’t like the idea of either.

Women apparently welcomed this ritual as they believed it would make them fer le.

The legend says that young women then put their names in an urn, young men drew out a name, and these two would indulge in unbridled lust and passion for the dura on of the Lupercalian feast.

This some mes ended in marriage.

Another theory is that Valen ne’s Day is named a er a Chris an martyr called Valen ne who was executed by the Romans on 14th February in AD 269.

The story goes that Valen ne was a Chris an priest who was jailed

by Roman Emperor Claudius II. The emperor believed that married men made bad soldiers so he banned them from marrying. Valen ne thought this was a lousy idea, so he conducted secret marriages for soldiers. When the emperor found out, he threw the priest in jail.

While awai ng his fate Valen ne became friendly with the jailer’s daughter - or fell in love with her, depending on which version you read. The girl was blind, and Valen ne is said to have cured her blindness. Before he was executed, he sent her a le er signed “from your Valen ne”.

Valen ne was later sanc fied and in AD 496 Pope Gelasius I made 14th February the day St Valen ne’s life was celebrated.

Wiki says the first recorded associa on of St Valen ne’s Day with roman c love was a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1382 to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of 15-year-old King Richard II of England with 15-year-old Anne of Bohemia”.

It was apparently only in the late 1700s that St Valen ne’s Day became popular as a lovers’ day, and printers began making cards with ribbons and lace.

With the inven on of the penny postage stamp in England in 1840, postage became cheap and the popularity of sending Valen ne cards soared to 400,000 in the first year a er the stamp was introduced.

Of course St Valen ne’s Day has been highly commercialised for decades, an opportunity for retailers to s ck a red heart on merchandise and crank up the price.

As the creator of Peanuts cartoons Charles Schultz said: “All you need is love. But a li le chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

The Knysna Montessori School Friday Market celebrates its twentieth birthday this year.

Sadly, it is also the year of retirement for one of its very first stallholders, Kilzers Kitchen.

Albin and Jenny Kilzer are the chef owners of the well-known Kilzers Kitchen Cookery School in Knysna, home to the famous Cook and Look Dinner Evenings.

Albin and Jenny joined the Friday Market at its inception in 2002, building a delight ful stall known as ‘Kilzers Kitchen’, which housed its own permanent kitchen equipment. Since then, they have been one of the Market’s most popular food stalls, supplying gourmet food over the years to thousands of local, national and international visitors. The demand for their excellent fare, mostly locally grown and sourced, became greater over the years, and they were joined by their children and staf f on Friday Market evenings, who added their hard work, creativity and flair to Kilzers Kitchen.

The Friday Market and all their Staf f, of fer their most sincere thanks to Albin and Jenny, their children and staf f, for their dedication and constant provision of the most excellent quality food to the at tending visitors. The Friday Market will not be quite the same without them, and they will be sorely missed.

After spending 10 years in the United Kingdom, Dr Herman and Sr Treacy decided to sell their practice and move back to South Africa.

Dr Herman joined a very busy and successful practice in Houghton, Johannesburg as full partner. Sr Treacy soon took on the role of practice manager.

Regularly visiting family and friends in the area, the Steenkamp family fell in love with Knysna and decided to leave the big city behind and make our beautiful town their home.

Dr Herman has a special interest in orthopaedics and is passionate about patient care and preventative medicine. He hopes to bring his experience form the UK and the busy Joburg practice to the Garden Route We are pleased that Dr Herman and Sr Treacy will be joining Dr Pieter Jordaan, Sr Andri, Heidi, Rozel, and Christoff as part of the the George Rex Veterinary team.

WELKOM ... Ons is bitter opgewonde om Dr. Herman Steenkamp, sy vrou Sr. Treacy Steenkamp en hulle twee kinders, Emily en Liam, by ons George Rex Veearts- familie te verwelkom.

Na tien jaar in Engeland, het Dr Herman en Sr Treacy besluit om hulle praktyk daar te verkoop en terug na Suid-Afrika te verhuis. Dr Herman het toe by ‘n besige en baie suksesvolle kleindierpraktyk in Houghton, Johannesburg as vol vennoot aangesluit en Sr Treacy het die pos as praktykbestuurder beklee.

Die Steenkamps is gereelde besoekers aan Knysna, en het sommer gou op ons mooi dorp verlief geraak. Hulle het besluit om die groot stad vir Knysna te verruil en onlangs hierheen verhuis.

Dr Herman is veral in ortopedie geïnteresseerd en passievol oor uitstekende kliëntediens en voorkomende geneeskunde. Hy is gretig om sy ondervinding en kundigheid wat hy oor die afgelope 22 jaar in Engeland en Johannesburg opgebou het, na die tuinroete te bring.

Ons is bly dat Dr Herman en Sr Treacy by Dr Pieter Jordaan, Sr Andri, Heidi, Rozel, en Christoff aansluit as deel van George Rex Veearts Praktyk.
