BITTER SWEET SUGAR When travelling in other countries, I some mes find that food is not always what one expects it to be.

I had one such experience on a freezing winter’s day in Boston while walking the 5km Freedom Trail. I ducked into a restaurant and ordered clam chowder with cornbread. I love mielie bread and expected the cornbread to be similar.

The soup was delicious, but I took a bite of cornbread and stopped mid chew. It was as sweet as cake. I just could not eat it – not with soup anyway.

That was my introduc on to the United States’s love affair with sugar.

Two years later I spent a year living in the US and learned that 80% of 600 000 packaged food items contained added sugar. Even ordinary sliced bread was sweet. When I men oned this to friends, they replied: “Oh, if you want bread without sugar, you must go to a bakery.”

Peanut bu er was as sweet as if you had mixed it with syrup.

Baked beans were so sweet I dumped them behind the shrubs as compost.

Sliced ham was sweetened, and I never found unsweetened yoghurt in that en re year. There were many more.

That was in 2008.

Now, to my dismay, I find that South Africa is going the same way.

Plain yoghurt has a teaspoon of sugar per serving. Baked beans have two and a half teaspoons a serving. Most peanut bu er is sweet. Even low GI whole wheat bread has half a teaspoon of added sugar per slice.

We already know that too much sugar can lead to obesity and diabetes. This week I read in a Harvard newsle er that too much sugar can affect the health of your heart. It is not yet well understood, but there appear to be several indirect connec ons.

In 2016, 26.2% of South African adults were obese and another 23.6% overweight - half our adult popula on.

What can we do? Sadly, we do not have a culture of consumer ac vism, nor does it seem that we have a culture of people who want less sugar.

The government’s sugar tax on cool drinks does li le to solve the problem, just gives them another income stream.

All I can do is read labels – boring, but I am learning which brands to avoid. Be warned: food producers use about 40 different words for “sugar” - probably to disguise it - including lactose, corn syrup, fructose, beet sugar, demerara, agave nectar, dextrose and galactose.

But here’s the thing: they are all sugar and all end up converted by the body into glucose.

When smoking decreased in the US, I heard that tobacco companies increased the nico ne content, one assumes to increase the likelihood of addic on in new smokers.

I cannot help feeling something similar is being done with added sugar. It is not a drug, sure, but humans are hard-wired to go for highenergy foods. This was evolu onally important when we were huntergatherers and food was not abundant.

Today, when shelves are groaning under cheap, sugary foodstuffs, it has become a health hazard.

I for one am going to push back. I hope you do too.
