NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AND SELF-STORIES So how many New Year’s resolu ons have you already broken?

A cruel ques on perhaps, but if you have, at least you have plenty of company. Research shows that most people break New Year’s resolu ons within the first few weeks.

The most common resolu ons include: exercise more; lose weight; eat healthily; quit smoking; drink less alcohol; cut down on social media me; spend less money; get organised; learn a new hobby or skill; spend more me with loved ones.

Apparently one reason people break resolu ons is because they are o en too general: “Exercise more” needs to be specific. If you already run 10km three mes a week then say that you will run 15km.

Or if you cannot even remember when last you heaved your body into a run (was it seeing that huge spider in the shower last year?) then make it realis c: resolve to walk briskly around the neighbourhood for 20 minutes three mes a week. Keep at it, and who knows? You could be doing the Knysna half marathon one day.

Also important is that if you skip a day - or a week - don’t give up.

Just pick up where you le off.

All this is really quite obvious, isn’t it?

Then this week I read something that was not so obvious, not just about why New Year’s resolu ons fail, but why many decisions we make about changing our behaviour fail. It has to do with something called our “self-story”.

An ar cle in Psychology Today says it is well recognised that we all have our own stories about ourselves. This “story” is the idea we have about ourselves, about who we are, and it operates in the background of our lives all the me.

They say we make decisions that match our idea of ourselves, which fit our self-stories.

When we make a decision that does not fit our self-stories, we feel uncomfortable – or the decision fails.

The ar cle said if we want to change our behaviour, we first have to change the story of ourselves. They call it “story edi ng”.

The best way to do this is to write down your self-story: who you are, how you see yourself. Doesn’t have to be long – can just be phrases if you like.

Then look at what you have wri en about yourself, and see if any of this goes against the changes you want to make.

For instance, if your self-story says you are lazy, but you want to be more ac ve, then edit your story to say you are energe c. Just write it down: “I am energe c”, and say it to yourself o en.

If your self-story says you are pessimis c, edit your story to say you are op mis c.

The ar cle says: “The technique of story edi ng is so simple it does not seem possible that it can result in such deep and profound change. But the research shows that one re-wri en self-story can make all the difference.”

I have never tried it, but think I will give it a bash. Interes ng way to start the New Year.
