THINKING OUT OF THE CHRISTMAS BOX Have you been rushing around buying Christmas presents, wracking your brains about what to buy for people who really don’t need anything?

Hê hê, not me. Our extended family decided years ago that it was a load of consumerist codswallop.

We do buy for the children, but for the adults we do the “Secret Santa” story: all names go in a hat, one person pulls them out and you get a message: “This year you are buying a gi for Robby.” Each adult receives one gi and has to buy only one gi – and you don’t know who it is from. Works like a charm.

But why buy “things” for gi s? Why not think out of the box – and at the same me support local economies, not some company in China or Europe.

My niece introduced me to the concept of buying really different gi s. Once she gave us a bus tour around the peninsula in an opentopped bus. What fun that was. Type of thing one never does in one’s own city. We could hop on and hop off at various stops – at a wine farm, or for lunch, or to visit an interes ng place – and then catch the next one.

Another me she gave us a tram tour of the winelands, also hop on and off. Stop for brekkers at one place, a wine tas ng at another, a slow lunch somewhere else, and bused back home. No driving. It was great.

In Knysna there are lovely ac vi es you can give as gi s. Those canopy tours, where you swing through the forest, look brilliant. I s ll have to try that.

A cruise on the Knysna lagoon, or a speedboat tour through The Heads and along the coastline.

Or a boat trip that has oyster tas ng on board too.

Then there are guided tours through the forest on “scooter-bikes”, adver sed to give you a high-speed rush and learn about the ecosystem of the Garden Route Na onal Park. (Here comes a yellowwood – whoosh – there it goes!)

Whale and dolphin-watching trips too, and the sundowner yacht cruise.

Lovely presents to give – even to people who have lived on the Garden Route for years.

But the spirit of Christmas is of course much more than the gi s and the fes ve grub, isn’t it.

It is a me when people generally show kindness and generosity towards others; to strangers or the homeless, to the sick or the poor, and reach out to them in some way, perhaps invi ng someone who is alone to Christmas dinner, or giving food or gi s or money to the poor.

It is probably one of the reasons that people enjoy Christmas; they like that feeling of being generous and kind.

They also like the experience, if only for a day, of uni ng with others across social divides.

I think Pope John XXIII captured this when he said: “Mankind is a great, immense family. This is proved by what we feel in our hearts at Christmas.”

Have a happy Christmas, and a New Year that is healthy, prosperous, and sees us all try to make some small difference for the common good.
