COOLER-BOX CARS AND SELF-CUTTING HAIR Schools are closed and the long summer holidays have begun.

Ah, I remember that happy feeling when we walked home from school on break-up day in December, excited at the prospect of six weeks of no school! (Yes, we all walked in those days, or cycled. Just a handful were chauffeured by the moms. How mes have changed.)

Then when I became a newspaper reporter, December was downright boring. Stuck in the office and nothing was happening.

Everyone was on holiday so there was precious li le news, but lots of adver sing which meant big papers and the pages had to be filled.

December became known in the newspaper world as The Silly Season, because lots of really trivial stories were published just to fill the pages.

So Stoep Chat is following this old tradi on and bringing you some of the silly season stories that have been recently published.

Handle this weird one reported by AP: Saudi authori es have cracked down on those who break the rules at camel beauty contests and have disqualified 40 camels. The reason? Their owners cheated by giving the camels Botox injec ons to swell their lips, hormone injec ons to pump up their muscles, and face li s.

Actually, that is not just weird, it’s cruel.

Then there are the reports of an Australian guy who was arrested last week for driving without a licence. Not so strange, but what he was driving was definitely odd: a big blue cooler box, with handlebars, brakes and a li le engine at the back. Quite fun, I think, but the cops didn’t and have impounded his cool ride.

And how is this for selfishness? A man in the US, who had taken out a book from a college library, decided to return it last week – 49 years late. The book is Ba les on the Monsoon about the Vietnam war, and this guy took it out in 1972. His excuse? He thought it was a good book and enjoyed reading it over and over.

So why did he not just buy a copy, instead of hogging it to himself for 49 years?

Then there are reports of a barber in the US who is about to re re. Nothing unusual there, except that this man, who has made a living out of cu ng people’s hair, has not had his own hair cut since 1978.

The photograph shows his hair onto his shoulders, which puzzled me because it should have been far longer a er 43 years.

Turns out the guy had German measles as an adult, and it changed his hair. It became very thin, and when it reached a certain length, the hairs just broke off.

So he didn’t bother cu ng it again.

Here’s one I really enjoyed: an Oxford University professor has worked out how many legs there are in the Christmas Carol The 12 Days of Christmas – you know the one about a partridge in a pear tree and so on.

Well the answer is 808 legs.

The real fun is in how he works it out, but it’s too long to tell here.

Even though Olaf does not communicate easily, he is a well-known figure around town. His journey with us started many years ago in the Queen Street annex and then in 2014 he moved to Loeriehof Old Age Home in Graham Street. Since he has no family support, he looks to Loeriehof for his love and care.
