Who should undergo a VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT - RFA? People who have problems with blood flow in their legs (venous insufficiency) and where veins may bulge, twist, and stand out under your skin. They can also cause symptoms such as aching, cramping, burning or swelling in your legs and around ankles, skin thickening or change in colour. The procedure can also be performed for cosmetic purposes. Why should I undergo VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT - RFA? Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. It represents a minimally invasive way to remove varicose veins using radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter. The catheter closed the veins from the inside. This technique uses radiofrequency energy (instead of laser energy) to heat up and damage the wall inside a vein. This treatment requires only a tiny incision in the leg. It is often done in-rooms using only local anesthesia. Patients are able to return to work after as little as 3 days post-procedure and will need to wear compression stockings which are also supplied by Doctor Swart’s Practice.

KNYSNA DISASTER FUND CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 NOVEMBER 2021 AND REASONS FOR CLOSURE OF THE FUND. The inevitable day has arrived. The Knysna Disaster Fund has come to an end. We are no longer able to replenish household necessi es for Knysna fire Vic ms. Not because we were found “wan ng”, but because there is no “Room at the Inn”. Circumstances have prevailed and we have “nowhere else to go”. Our pleas to the municipality have fallen on deaf ears. For eighteen months we have been appealing and apparently not even one or two empty rooms could be found in the whole town centre. Our beneficiaries came from the whole Knysna Municipal area, including Sedgefield, Rheenendal and Karatara. Over the past ten years, our work has increased as can be seen by the following sta s cs: YEAR 2012 2014 2016 2018 2020

We have come a long way, with many people on board, each of whom gave of their me and willing spirit in one way or another. Donors who have brought us mountains of bags and boxes, helpers who have procured surplus stock, street collectors - a long faithful willing list of monetary dona ons every six months, and the generous people who have filled those collec on boxes. All pass before my eyes like a spectre coming and going. All doing it for the sake of Goodness – trying to fill a need All of this was made possible by the generosity of The Child Welfare Society – who saw it as an extension of their work with families. Such important work which has escalated in vast propor ons, so as to necessitate many more social workers. Sadly they need ever more office space, space that we were lucky to have had for over 30 years! Our hopes of liaison with the Red Cross have been dashed, so we bow out graciously, distribu ng our vast array of possessions to many chari es in the area. We trust that Red Cross will pick up the reins under the banner of “Disaster Management”. Our hearts are full at this me, but volunteering is just as possible as always. No doubt we shall all find our niche somewhere. “There is so much to do” I would like to thank you all for the support you gave. I must commend Jill for taking the ini a ve when the Covid Pandemic brought us more senior vulnerable ones to a halt. You all kept the fire vic ms supplied, and the shelves full, and you brought in much needed revenue by resourcefulness, always with such empathy for people who were trauma zed by the loss of their homes and meagre possessions. NEWS VIA “NOMMER ASSEBLIEF” I got a lovely email from a photographer I used to work with on The Star many years ago and we started remembering news trips we had done together. One was to the small town of Chris ana that had been hard hit by floods. If you were on distant jobs, there was no me to get back to Johannesburg to meet the daily deadline – and this was 1988 so there was no internet. Everything had to be transmi ed by landline. What a job! Photographers had to process and print photographs on the job, so had to set up makeshi darkrooms in hotel bathrooms. They brought their chemicals and equipment with them and taped black rubbish bags over the windows. We reporters wrote our stories in long hand, then telephoned The Star and dictated the story, sentence by sentence, to one of “dictate typists”. They wore headphones and were there just to take copy from reporters in the field. Then came John’s turn: transmi ng the photo via the landline telephone. The photo had to be wound around a cylindrical drum, then he unscrewed the ear piece and connected the drum to the phone. Then he dialled the office, they connected their side up, and he started the machine. It had a li le arm that moved slowly over the photo, picking up the tones of white, grey and black, and somehow this travelled down the telephone wires for hundreds of kilometres, and was picked up onto photographic paper in the office. It could take 5 to 8 minutes to send one photo. Now the Chris ana hotel had a seriously ancient phone, even by 1988 standards. It had a li le handle on the side that you cranked and were connected to the town’s switchboard: “Nommer asseblief?” the switchboard would ask. You gave the number and he connected you. So we did that, but a er a couple of minutes, the call was cut off. We had to start again, or there would be a big white line across the photo. But the second call also cut off. So I dialled the switchboard and asked why we kept on being cut off. “Want niemand praat nie, dame,” he replied. So he had listened in and heard just silence, and cut off the calls. Man, then I had to try to explain that the reason no one was speaking was because we were sending a photograph over the phone. Now that may seem so ordinary today with cell phones and internet, but in this dorp in 1988, it was science fic on. The more I explained, the quieter he became. Eventually I stopped and asked: “Verstaan meneer?” A long silence then: “Nee dame.” Meanwhile John was cracking up silently next to me. Eventually I just begged him not to cut us off again, no ma er how silent the call was. He was silent for a while. Then: “Okay dame.” We got our pic through eventually, but what tales he must have had to tell about those snaakse mense van die pers! Quite hard work ge ng the news to readers on me in those days – but a lot more fun!
