COVID: SCIENTISTS SPEAK OUT Lockdowns don’t work and must go. Travel bans don’t work and must go.

Covid is here for good so we need to live with it by taking a ra onal approach that balances health with living normal lives.

You may already have read it, but in case not, the above is advice given to the government by the Scien sts’ Collec ve on how South Africa can tackle the Covid-19 “maze” ahead of the summer holidays.

I just love it! What a breath of fresh air.

The collec ve is made up of 22 scien sts from South Africa’s major universi es and medical ins tu ons, specialists in different aspects of Covid, and they are telling the authori es what to do.

They base it on two years of scien fic, epidemiological and human behaviour data to show what does and doesn’t help control the spread of Covid.

So nice to read something based on evidence, with no poli cal dross.

First they list what has not worked. They say the virus spreads easily and travel bans between countries – or provinces - did not stop it.

Also, by the me travel bans are imposed, the variant has probably already spread. We have seen that with Omicron.

Lockdowns should be scrapped they say, because at best, all they did was delay infec ons, as an es mated 60% to 80% of South Africans got infected. And lockdowns caused “huge social and economic suffering”.

(The first lockdown did give the authori es breathing space to prepare).

They believe there is no value in pu ng restric ons on outdoor ac vi es.

“People need to be outdoors for their health and well-being, and there is much be er ven la on outdoors than in many other places that people were allowed to gather last year – while walking on the beach was banned.”

Hear hear!

Herd immunity? It is not going to happen. The virus will mutate and recirculate, like all the other coronaviruses.

Curfews are unnecessary, because the virus “does not restrict transmission to the early hours”.

So what should the government do?

Prepare health facili es properly. Ensure there are beds, nurses, oxygen – not like some provinces where new facili es opened but they had no staff.

Monitor infec on rates and when there is a spike, prepare more facili es fast.

They say there are no “single-shot” vaccines, so all who had one J&J jab need another shot.

And this one is going to be controversial: the government should make it mandatory for vaccine passports to enter public places, including restaurants, taxis and places of worship.

The only effec ve protec on we have currently is vaccina ons, so they say government must make vaccina ons easy: “Use pop-ups in taxi ranks, malls, grants queues.”

Only a third of South Africans have had at least one vaccina on. Most of these have been through private pharmacies or NGOs. So the government vaccine targets have been a “devasta ng failure”. It needs to look hard at why it has not met these targets and come up with “new energy and new plans”.

And we have to learn to live with the virus.

“We need a ra onal, though ul approach to balance the real health effects of Covid-19 with living happy lives”.

Let’s hope government is listening.
