RAGING WATERS The floodwaters in George have receded, the mopping up is over, and now comes coun ng the cost.

I feel for those people whose homes were inundated, and who are seeing what they can salvage and what they will have to dump.

I also feel for the authori es that will have to fork out millions from already ght budgets to repair roads and other infrastructure.

The tricky thing about floods is their high level of unpredictability.

Weather warnings can alert people to the possibility of flooding at a regional level, but no one can predict exactly which towns will be affected.

I have seen many floods, and know that sense of bewilderment people have as they watch water streaming through their homes. I have also been struck by how bewilderment is almost always replaced by calm acceptance, and a readiness to knuckle down and sort out the damage.

I remember interviewing a young farmer on the flooded Orange River. He and his family were camped in a barn that overlooked their flooded house. Almost his en re grape crop had been destroyed.

What was he going to do?

“Start again. That is all one can do.”

Another thing I have been struck by is the sheer power of floodwater. In KZN a er Cyclone Demoina, the flooded Mfolozi River swept away the huge concrete and steel bridge across the N2, plus the railway bridge. Trunks of massive trees on the banks were snapped like matchs cks.

People o en underes mate the power of floodwater, some mes with tragic consequences. Some years ago a nurse driving an ambulance to work in Montagu was washed to her death crossing a flooded bridge.

There have always been floods, but the new reality is that with climate change, all extreme weather will become more frequent and more severe: floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes - even abnormal cold spells.

These events are already more frequent and severe, with the average global temperature 1.1°C warmer than it was before the Industrial Revolu on. Dreadful to imagine what it will be like when we go to 2.4°C, which is the path we are on.

So we need to adapt. Municipali es will have to review where they put infrastructure, and ensure no building is allowed in floodplains, close to rivers or to the sea. They will have to look at making a certain amount of solar power compulsory on new houses, plus rain water tanks, dual flush loos, low-flow showerheads etc.

Some SA insurance companies are working with climate scien sts to see which homes carry higher risks, and they are adjus ng premiums accordingly. So in the same street a house in a dip may pay higher premiums for flood cover than its neighbour on slightly higher ground.

So ja, we have to make a mind shi . Many countries are moaning that they need money to adapt to climate change, which is true.

But we also need to start thinking about clever ways to overcome these obstacles.

As Tony Robbins said: “It is not resources but resourcefulness that ul mately makes the difference.”
