RESCUED BY A HAND SIGNAL I learned something this week that I think everyone should know.

It involves a simple hand sign that is a signal for help. It saved a missing 16-year-old girl from her 61-year-old captor in Kentucky in the US this week, and who knows, it may have saved her life.

The story has been carried in many online publica ons and when I read about it, I thought it was a bit like those movies when someone is being held against their will and you think: “Can’t someone see she is in distress and help her?”

In this case, someone did.

What happened was the teenaged girl, who lived in North Carolina, got into a car with the man in her home town. She was “acquainted” with him.

There are no details of exactly what happened next but her parents reported her missing.

The man drove with the teenager across several states for two weeks. She was effec vely his prisoner.

She must have been really scared. It was reported that police found a cell phone in the man’s possession with images that allegedly “portrayed a juvenile female in a sexual manner”.

Back to the hand signal. It was developed by the Canadian Women’s Founda on in response to the rise in domes c violence during the Covid pandemic.

It is simple: raise the hand with the palm facing out, bend the thumb across the palm and then close the fingers over the thumb and hold the pose.

It signals: “I need help, domes c violence.”

This sign apparently went viral on TikTok social media pla orm last year, and that is how the young girl knew about it.

No one knows how many mes she signaled her distress to passing motorists in those two weeks, but on a highway in Kentucky, one motorist recognised it.

Reports say he then dialled 911 and followed the silver Toyota for seven miles, relaying informa on to the cops all the me. He said the girl “appeared to be in distress”.

The police intercepted the vehicle and the man was arrested.

He was charged with unlawful imprisonment and for possession of the sexual material on the cell phone.

Police photos show the teenager looking exhausted with rings under her eyes.

How lucky that she had the presence of mind – and the knowledge through social media – to make that sign.

It is worth going online to look at the Canadian site canadianwomen.org - to find out how to respond if you see someone giving this signal.

It does not always mean that you need to call the cops, unless you believe they are in immediate danger. If someone is signalling about domes c violence, they clearly do not feel free to speak about it, or may even fear speaking about it, so calling the cops could make things worse.

The Candadian founda on advises that you check in with the person “in a safe way” and find out what they need you to do.

So, a happy ending to this story, but we need to keep our eyes open for anyone using the signal.

And if you are the one who needs help, please try to use it.
