POO-SNIFFING POOCH HELPS WHALES I saw an intriguing BBC video this week. It started with a stocky li le dog standing in the prow of a motorboat, wearing a red harness and an -glare sunglasses. She was in search of killer whale poo.

What on earth, you might say. Well, this is the tale. Killer whales, or Orcas, off the Pacific coast of North America, known as Southern Resident killer whales, are endangered. Only about 79 le .

One reason is the high death rate of calves. One of these Orca moms made world headlines in 2018 when she carried her dead baby around for ages un l the li le thing just fell apart.

Scien sts wanted to find out why so many of these Orcas were dying young. Whale researcher Dr Deborah Giles says on the video that one of the best ways to find out what is happening inside whales is to look at what comes out.

Enter Eba, the poo-sniffing pooch.

According to Giles, Eba can smell whale poo a mile away and “points” to where it is. The researchers scoop it up and analyse it.

Two key findings are that the whales are not ge ng enough to eat, because there are not enough salmon any more, and that whales are carrying a huge load of toxic chemicals, known as POPs – or persistent organic pollutants.

POPs include industrial chemicals and some pes cides that leach from the land into the ocean where they are absorbed by plankton and go up the food chain, becoming more concentrated in marine animals un l, as the video says, they reach “lethal levels” in whales.

When a whale is pregnant these toxins pass from the mother to her foetus, and later to her calf through her milk. No wonder calves have a high death rate.

Males that usually live to their 60s are now dying in their early 20s, their prime breeding age.

Dreadful. There are moves to try to reduce POPs, but clearly too li le too slowly.

But isn’t it great that Eba, clearly a brak, is helping scien sts work on this problem?

Eba herself almost did not survive. According to an ar cle in Today she was dumped as a puppy outside an animal shelter, a ny, cold, wet bundle.

They nursed her back to health and put her in a foster home, but she ran away. Then whale researcher Giles adopted her as a pet.

Giles said in the ar cle she had no idea that Eba would become a “conserva on canine”, trained to detect wildlife poo, but a er a while she realised her rescue dog had poten al, and into the programme she went.

Giles said in the ar cle: “As we pass through the centre of a scent cone, which is the strongest por on of that smell, she’ll whip around to the side of the boat to tell us: ‘Hey, wait a minute – you’ve passed it.’”

It is not just those Pacific Orcas that are affected: toxins apparently affect half the world’s Orcas.

Sad that we do so much harm.

But great that there are people who are trying to set things right.

And wonderful that a li le abandoned brak is helping them.
