ADRIFT AND ALONE FOR 80 DAYS. I love rescue stories. One I remember well was about a 66-yearold Swedish yachtsman, S g Lundvall, who had dri ed alone at sea for 80 days in a ny 26 yacht a er a violent storm had snapped his mast and taken out his radio. It was 2012 and Lundvall was on a solo voyage from the UK to Australia when the storm hit about 400 miles off Durban. The first we heard about it was from a Mari me Rescue Co-ordina on Centre (MRCC) press release that said a Swedish yachtsman had been rescued by a Greek ship off Richards Bay and was now back in Sweden. I was assigned the story. He came from a town called Västerås. I tracked him down through interna onal inquiries and was soon cha ng to this remarkable man. Lundvall said the storm had lasted for days. With a broken mast, he was at the mercy of the currents. When it abated, he jury-rigged an emergency mast that enabled him to sail “a bit”, but mostly it was the currents that took him. Meanwhile one of Lundvall’s friends had alerted the MRCC in Cape Town to say he was a week overdue, so a broadcast was sent to all ships in the area to be on the lookout. The MRCC heard nothing. As days became weeks, Lundvall knew he was in trouble. He had no back-up radio and his supplies were limited. He ra oned his food and water, and when it rained, put out buckets to catch rainwater. He had just three emergency flares. A er some me he saw a ship in the distance and let off one of the flares, but it sailed on without seeing him. Weeks passed and he saw another ship, sent up another flare and the same thing happened. I remember his saying that one of his biggest challenges was to keep his mind strong, not to give into despair. Weeks passed and he saw his third ship in the distance. He had one flare le . Lundvall knew it was impossible to see his ny yacht at night. This last flare was his only hope. I wrote at the me: “With what must have been enormous control, Lundvall held on to the flare un l he reckoned the ship was as close as it would ever get on that course, then squeezed the trigger.” The ship sailed on. But he had been seen. Up on the bridge one of the officers had happened to look le just at that moment and saw the flare. It had looked as if the ship was sailing by because it takes me for a ship that size to stop, but it did stop and Lundvall was rescued. His weight had dropped from 85kg to 65kg. “I am skin and bone,” he said from his hometown. “I am very weak s ll and my balance is not good. I look drunk when I walk”. I asked if he would ever sail again a er his 80-day ordeal. “Oh yes, but never again across oceans.” I would love to know what it is that enables some to survive and others not. Whatever it is, Lundvall had it.
