QUIZ COUNCIL CANDIDATES – BEFORE YOU VOTE. On November 1st you will be going to the polls to make your cross for the councillor you think will serve your community best.

Or will you? I was brought up to think it was our duty to vote. My parents used to tell us as kids: “People have fought and died to get the vote, so use it.” And of course millions in our country never had the vote. So yes, I vote.

Some people feel their single cross will make no difference so why bother? Others say that so many councillors are corrupt, or not up to doing the job, so again, why bother?

Both are huge problems in this country. Corrup on has become ingrained in public life, people who line their pockets with tax money, chea ng ci zens out of educa on, health, housing etc.

And so many, when they are bust, feel no shame.

The Daily Maverick held a survey last week, asking readers to rate their councillors from zero (“you’re fired”) to 10 (”I will vote for you again.”)

Interes ngly, the category that won was the 10/10, where voters would re-elect their councillors, Equally interes ng was that the zero category –“you’re fired!” – came second. Quite telling.

My view is don’t throw out the whole system because of some bad apples. As US journalist George Jean Nathan said: “Bad officials are elected by good ci zens who don’t vote.”

It is a tough job, being a councillor, if you do your job properly.

You have to balance many compe ng needs, par cularly in a country as unequal as ours, and the budgets are never enough.

I have come across some really good councillors: Hard working, progressive, in touch with the needs of their cons tuencies and commi ed to ge ng the job done. And honest.

I have also come across some real duds. Just couldn’t be bothered even to read the documents before council mee ngs – or even a end them. Knysna and Ple have had their share of those, as well as corrupt ones.

Back to vo ng.

I think it is good to get to grips with your ward candidates now, before vo ng, irrespec ve of what party they belong to.

Make a list of what you consider the priori es in your ward, and write to each candidate and ask them, if elected, how they would deal with these ma ers, and get some commitments from them.

Ques on their responses if they seem too glib, ask for details like me lines.

If they are standing for re-elec on, ask them how many council mee ngs they missed, and check. Look at what they achieved.

A er elec ons, hold them to their promises. You can do a “First 100 Days in Office” assessment. Use social media for your findings.

Whoever you vote for on November 1st, will be with us for the next five years.

There are two quotes about elec ons that I like, the first is from Plato: “One of the penal es for refusing to par cipate in poli cs is that you end up being governed by your inferiors”.

And from Thomas Jefferson: “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who par cipate.”

So head for the polls!
